What’s New in June 2022?

The summer is always the busiest time for new movies hitting theaters, and it’s no different at the Box and on Redbox On Demand. We’ve got lots of great movies that recently arrived (plus many that will be available before the end of the month), so my goal today is to highlight a few of the best so you know what to prioritize watching over the coming weeks!

Here are 11 movies to have on your radar in June:

Downton Abbey: A New Era – If you’re a fan of the PBS series, this is a must-watch. This time, the Crawley family ventures south (the South of France, specifically) to check out a villa that the dowager countess inherited, and their adventures are—as always—set against some of the biggest world changes and transitions.

Crimes of the Future – Now imagine a movie that is the exact opposite of Downton Abbey, and you get Crimes of the Future, rated what we call in the biz a “hard R” for “strong, disturbing, violent content and grisly images, graphic nudity and some language.” Set in a future where humans have evolved due to climate change and pollution, it follows a performance artist who showcases the “metamorphosis” of his organs. But before you blow it off as some sort of B-movie schlock horror, know that it’s directed by David Cronenberg and stars Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart and Léa Seydoux, and got a 6-minute standing O at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Contractor – Chris Pine stars as an ex-special-forces sergeant whose first assignment with an underground military force goes horribly awry, and he finds himself on the run.

The Northman – What movie that you’ve never heard of stars Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Alexander Skarsgård, Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe? This one! It’s about a Viking prince (Skarsgård) out to avenge his father’s murder.

Ambulance – Adoptive brothers played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II get themselves into quite the pickle when they steal an ambulance after a heist-gone-wrong … only to discover an EMT (Eiza González) is still inside.

Morbius – Jared Leto and Matt Smith figure out how to cure a deadly blood disease—but unfortunately the cure turns people into vampires. Witness the origin story of one of Spider-Man’s biggest foes.

Father StuLooking for something a bit more heartwarming? Stu’s got you! Mark Wahlberg stars as a boxer who realizes his true calling is to become a Catholic priest. Now that’s something you don’t see every day…

The Bad Guys – I love the premise of this adaptation of Aaron Blabey’s children’s book: all the animals who normally get a bad rap—think snakes, sharks, tarantulas—decide they might as well live up (down?) to their reputations. It’s got a wonderful voice cast including Awkwafina, Sam Rockwell, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos and more.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent – One of my favorites of the year! Nic Cage starring as Nic Cage. Nothing gets better than that!

Firestarter – This remake of the 1984 movie starring baby Drew Barrymore keeps the same plot of Stephen King’s best-selling novel: when a little girl’s (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) pyrokinetic powers attract sketchy government agents who want to nab her, her parents (Zac Efron and Sydney Lemmon) do everything they can to stop that from happening.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore – The third film in this Harry Potter prequel series revolves around … more magic and wizarding stuff. Hey, I’M not going to be the one to give away Dumbledore’s secrets!?!
