Movies for National Grinch Day

It doesn’t feel like the holidays to me until I’ve seen little Cindy Lou Who and all of the Whos in Whoville singing:

Fahoo fores, dahoo dores
Welcome Christmas, come this way
Fahoo fores, dahoo dores
Welcome Christmas, Christmas day!

Do I KNOW what “Fahoo fores, dahoo dores” means? No, I do not. Do I care? Also no. But I do care about recognizing that today is National Grinch Day in honor of the green guy whose heart ends up growing three sizes thanks to the unbreakable Christmas spirit of the Whos.

So I’ll be celebrating with one or more of these movies tonight and for the rest of the week. While some aren’t Grinch-centric, they are Grinch-related, because they focus on not-so-nice guys who have a change of heart—though maybe not as literally as the Grinch’s.

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! – Let’s hear it for the OG! It doesn’t get better than the original 1966 animated adaptation featuring the voice of Boris Karloff, and the soundtrack is the best.

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas – In 2000, they took the exclamation point out of the title and brought in Jim Carrey as the Grinch. This is a live-action adaptation the whole family can enjoy.

Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch – … And then came the CGI-animated version from Illumination, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch voicing our big green antihero.

The Despicable Me movies – In the 2010 original which led to the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time, we see that the villainous Gru (Steve Carell) make a Grinch-like transformation thanks to three little girls.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 – Finally, justice for Snape. “Always.” Sniff!

Terminator 2: Judgment Day – We don’t blame Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) for initially not believing that the same cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger) previously sent back in time to kill might now be on her side. But he eventually is.

Thor: Ragnarok – In this mind-bending sequel, Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) sneaky little bro Loki (Tom Hiddleston) slowly but surely begins a new path.

The Fate of the Furious – Sure, it may have taken EIGHT movies, but it’s better late than never for a certain character to start a less nasty chapter.

Have a great National Grinch Day, or as some say, “Merry Grinch-mas!”
