6 Movies to Watch After Tax Day

Whether you’re like me and are submitting your 1040 at the last second tonight or have had your returns in for weeks, by the time it hits midnight, Tax Day is over for all Americans. (Well, except those who were granted extensions, but you know what I mean.)

Here are 6 popular movies to celebrate having Tax Day behind us—all of them have IRS-centric subplots!

The Firm – As The Notorious B.I.G.’s infamous rap lyrics once warned us, “It's like the more money we come across, the more problems we see.” Such is the lesson Tom Cruise’s character, top Harvard Law grad Mitch McDeere, learns as he finds himself working for a shady firm that develops tax-evasion, tax-fraud and money-laundering schemes for the ultra-rich … and the mob.

House of Gucci – The outfit, the lewks, the hairstyles, the accents, THE DRAMA—they all might overshadow the real-life story, but the real-life story is about how Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), his wife Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and his cousin Paolo (Jared Leto) use proof of tax evasion to bring down their Uncle Aldo (Al Pacino) and take control of the Gucci empire.

Shawshank Redemption – There would be no Shawshank redemption for murder-convict Andy (Timothy Robbins) if he hadn’t offered tax services to his prison guards, who then protected him from being murdered by a violent gang of fellow felons. Later, Andy’s money-laundering skills eventually end up providing salvation for him and his prison BFF Red (Morgan Freeman).

Happy Gilmore – In this goofy Adam Sandler comedy (is there any other kind?) hockey player Happy Gilmore (Sandler) applies his skills to a long-range golf tournament in order to earn enough money to stop his grandma’s (Frances Bay) home from being foreclosed upon by the IRS.

Say Anything – OK, so yeah, the main thing people remember about this ‘80s high-school rom-com is John Cusack (as slacker Lloyd Dobler) in a trench coat, standing outside valedictorian Diane’s (Ione Skye) window with a boombox over his head blasting Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” Diane’s strict dad, Jim (John Mahoney) doesn’t approve of this opposites-attract teen romance, but then maybe he shouldn’t have committed tax fraud and ended up in prison, leading Diane spend her summer after graduation traveling Europe with Lloyd.

Robin Hood – In any of the many adaptations of this English folktale, the game is the same: Robin Hood “steals from the rich to give to the poor.” But the poor are only poor because the evil Sheriff of Nottingham taxes them to the hilt! Who’s your favorite Robin Hood?

Congrats to all who got their taxes in on time!
