6 Movies for National Coffee Day
You know when you’re on Zoom with people you just met, or join a new team at work, or otherwise have an occasion to suffer through an “icebreaker” session where you share a “fun fact” about yourself?
I’ve got 2 bits of trivia I fall back on in those times, without fail. The first is that I went to the same high school as Madonna. The second is that I’ve never had coffee. Haven’t even tasted it. Haven’t even ever had anything that’s coffee-flavored.
Upon hearing this, many people completely lose their minds and absolutely refuse to believe me, because they themselves are severely addicted to the magical bean. And you know what? I get it. That’s how I am about my Earl Grey hot tea every morning. On the rare occasion I’m unable to brew some, I’m a disaster. I can barely function. It’s embarrassing.
That means you can rest assured that even though I’ve never had coffee, I took the assignment to highlight coffee-centric movie scenes for today, National Coffee Day, very seriously. And the surprising part was I easily remembered many of these movie moments off the top of my head without even having to think on it.
So whether you can’t live without your morning cuppa joe or turn your nose up at the smell of brewing beans, I know you’ll enjoy any of these 6 movies with standout coffee scenes.
The Devil Wears Prada – One of intern Andy Sachs’ (Anne Hathaway) biggest stressors in life is getting her boss Miranda’s (Meryl Streep) coffee order just right. You have to understand—when you think your high-fashion-magazine Managing Editor boss is the devil incarnate, it’s super-unpleasant to run her errands.
Airplane II: The Sequel – The pandemic brought about some really nasty plane-passenger behavior. But has anything been as bad as the sky-high chaos that broke out when a flight attendant announced the plane ran out of coffee in this silly sequel?
Breakfast at Tiffany's – In my husband’s favorite movie, Audrey Hepburn (as Holly Golightly) spends the opening credits fabulously strolling past Manhattan’s Tiffany & Co. windows with a to-go cup of coffee and a pastry in hand.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me – I mean, one of this cult-fave TV series and 1992 film prequel’s catchphrases is: “That’s a damn fine cup of coffee.” It’s always uttered by Kyle MacLachlan as FBI Agent Dale Cooper, who’s visiting the peculiar town of Twin Peaks, Washington, to investigate a high-schooler’s disappearance.
La La Land – Coffee (and coffee-shop baristas) play a small but poignant role for Emma Stone’s aspiring-actress character Mia in this Best Picture nominee that follows Mia’s Tinseltown romance with jazz pianist Seb (Ryan Gosling).
Role Models – And finally, we declare we will always be 100% Team Rudd (playing the sarcastic community-service-serving energy-drink-salesman Danny) when he rants about the ridiculous names of coffee-cup sizes in this 2008 hidden gem of a comedy.
