5 Movies that go to Extremes

In the depths of winter, we all need something extra to take our minds off of the gross weather and lack of sunlight.

These 5 movies are so bizarre—so extreme—that you’ll forget all about those low, low temps in no time.

Violent Night – Just because the holidays are behind us doesn’t mean a Christmas-centric movie won’t deliver. Especially when it stars Black Widow and Stranger Things’ David Harbour as the one and only Santa Claus. But as you can probably guess from the title, this movie isn’t some family-friendly sing-a-long … Santa throws DOWN after he finds himself in the middle of a home invasion, and ends up using every Christmas prop known to mankind as a weapon. And good news: this badass Santa will be back soon, as a sequel was announced last month!

Babylon – I loved so much about this wild Damien Chazelle movie centering around filmmaking in the turbulent 1920s—when the industry moved from silent to motion pictures—but I cringed through a lot of it, too. Those were the parts that made this black dramedy extreme. From truly messed-up underground fetish dungeons, to rattlesnake fights, to elephant excrement, to drug-fueled ragers and accidental ODs, Babylon offers a lot to take in. But with a huge cast featuring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Jean Smart and more, it might be just what you need right now.

Knock at the Cabin – M. Night Shyamalan is back with this adaptation of Paul Tremblay’s 2018 horror novel “The Cabin at the End of the World.” What makes it so extreme is its premise: a group of strangers shows up at a family’s vacation spot (which is, you guessed it, a cabin in the middle of nowhere), demanding that one member of the family be sacrificed in order for the rest of the world to avoid an impending apocalypse. And let’s just say there’s proof the strangers aren’t completely crazy. Your heart might not be able to handle the tension!

Angry Neighbors – Have you ever gotten into a beef with a neighbor? I bet it didn’t get as extreme as this knock-down drag-out fight between a vengeful retired novelist (Frank Langella) and his obnoxious neighbor (Bobby Cannavale), who builds a monstrous McMansion next to the writer’s Hamptons home.

Bones & All – Is there anything more extreme than cannibalism? No. No there is not. And just because Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell are gorgeous cannibals doesn’t make it any more acceptable, people! See how their characters meet in the first place and eventually attempt to find their path in the world. (Warning: You’ll never stop wondering whether people you know might be cannibals after watching this movie!)
