When it comes to movies, it’s the main characters that get all the love. But for many movies, it’s the character that isn’t in the limelight that delivers the best zingers, plot lines, and even the best wardrobe. Here’s my top 10 movies with characters that are just too good to keep in the background.
Mean Girls – Mr. Duvall
Mr. Duvall, played by Tim Meadows, is probably one of the best characters in Mean Girls for 3 reasons. The first is that he is unphased by the high school drama that surrounds him daily. The second reason is that he has a scary good way of making EVERYONE give him their undivided attention at the impromptu school assembly. And finally, he says anything and everything on his mind and his confidence while wearing a tank and dress pants is unmatched.
The Devil Wears Prada – Nigel
The guy is basicalllllly a hero in disguise. Not only does he run the fashion and art side of Runway Magazine, but he does it knowing that Miranda is his close work friend. Nigel saves the day by giving Andy the glow up she needed to survive as Miranda’s assistant. And you also have to agree that he gave the best advice even if he threw a little sass in there (the iconic Stanley Tucci moments that I live for).
A Cinderella Story – Rhonda
Rhonda is the unsung hero of A Cinderella Story for more ways than I can count. She takes over the diner when Sam’s dad dies and runs it with authority, passion, and isn’t afraid to stand her ground. The best part of Rhonda is that she’ll do anything in the world to protect Sam and to give her the best life that she can. We just all need someone like Rhonda in our lives forever and Regina King too for that matter.
John Tucker Must Die – Scott aka THE OTHER TUCKER
Tbh, Scott deserved WAY more screen time than he got. He was Kate’s first real friend and the way that he charms his way through the science lab is way better than John could do. Penn Bagley gives off major John Mayer vibes here and the way that he talks about music really validates it. Anyone else wish he got a spin off and we got to see what happens after he got the girl?
Spider-Man Universe – Ned
If you think about it, there really wouldn’t be a Peter Parker without Ned. He’s Tom Holland’s right hand man and should have had WAY more screen time than he got. As played by Jacob Batalon, Ned is always doing the best job covering for Peter when he needs to go fight crime and villains and can be described as the best friend that we all want. And c’mon, he’s elite when it comes to keeping secrets so yeah, he belongs on the list of underrated characters.
Hairspray – Motormouth Maybelle
We stan an ICONIC queen! Not only does she give Velma Von Tussle a run for her money, but she is strong and sassy as ever. Queen Latifah shines so bright in this role and she truly was the best character hands down! The best thing about Maybelle is that she instills confidence into everyone she crosses paths with. I think I speak for all of us when I say that we’d do just about anything to spend the day with Motormouth Maybelle!
Footloose – Willard
There’s no better friendship than the one that unfolded between ‘can’t dance Willard’ and ‘rebel energy Ren’. The best thing about Willard is his calm, cooled and collective personality that has me laughing at any point in time. And how can you not fall in love with a character that gets dancing lessons from a group of little girls doing karaoke in the backyard. Ren and Ariel may have been the stars of the show, but Willard is the clear underrated character here.
The Princess Diaries – Joe
Don’t lie, we all wish that we could spend the day with Joe and his unwavering confident wit. There’s nothing that could break down his strong façade, okay, the queen knew how to do it, but she’s the QUEEN. For real though, I don’t think that anyone could play the role as the head of security as well as Héctor Elizondo did. We were all rooting for a happy ending and if it was up to me, we’d have a lot more of the Clarisse & Joe scene-stealing romance moments.
10 Things I Hate About You – Bianca Stratford
Sure, she was just a little sister, but her importance was anything but small. Played by Larisa Oleynik, Bianca Stratford embodies everything that we all wish we could be – fearless, powerful, and never afraid to speak her mind. The best part of Bianca is that she loves breaking the rules in a way that is fully supported by sass and determination. If you think about 10 Things I Hate About You, there’s no denying that you’re thinking about Bianca wearing ‘the belly’.
National Treasure – Riley
Let me just begin this saying that Riley may be the MOST underrated character to ever exist. Justin Bartha aka Riley was the real National Treasure of these movies and no one can convince me otherwise. He always is acting calm on the outside, but on the inside, his never ending knowledge gear is running a million miles an hour. The best part of Riley is that he’s never afraid to say what he’s thinking which makes him the perfect Nick Cage sidekick.
