Jessica Chastain turns 45 today, but her biggest birthday present might come Sunday night, when she’s up for the Actress in a Leading Role Oscar during the 94th Academy Awards telecast for her portrayal of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. (The film is also up for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar—a nod to Chastain’s amazing transformation.)
This is Chastain’s third Oscar nomination. The previous two were for her role as sympathetic socialite Celia in The Help, and for playing a (fictional) CIA analyst during the Bin Laden raid in Zero Dark Thirty. Will 2022 be her lucky year?
She’s not waiting around to find out, as she’s remained busy during COVID thanks to starring opposite Oscar Isaac in HBO’s Scenes from a Marriage, leading The 355’s cast of badass actresses including Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger, Lupita Nyong’o and Bingbing Fan, and filming The Good Nurse with Eddie Redmayne. The Good Nurse is set to be released at some point later this year, and tells the true story of serial killer Charles Cullen (Redmayne), who murdered more than 300 people during his 16 years as a nurse. Chastain plays another nurse who helps bring him down. Danish director Tobias Lindholm helmed the film, and he won the Best International Feature Film Oscar last year for Another Round, so maybe some of his Oscar luck will have rubbed off on Chastain!
