While the world continued to fall to pieces in 2021, one man accomplished some of the best work of his career. That man is Nicolas Cage, and the performance that had everyone buzzing was his role as the recluse Rob in the drama Pig. (Though let’s not forget his hilarious turn as the host of History of Swear Words on Netflix!)
I wouldn’t blame you if you immediately assumed Pig must be some over-the-top movie of the sort Cage has been cranking out nonstop these past few years. (*Cough* Running with the Devil, Willy’s Wonderland, Primal, Grand Isle, Jiu Jitsu *Cough*)
Rather, it’s about a grief-stricken former chef whose beloved truffle-hunting pig is stolen. Cage’s performances earned him critical acclaim and a Critics’ Choice Best Actor nomination, while catapulting the film to a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
So as we celebrate Cage’s 58th trip around the sun on his birthday today, we look forward to what’s next with great anticipation after watching the trailer for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which Cage stars as … a fictionalized version of himself. Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Wonder Woman 1984) plays Javi, an uber-wealthy Cage superfan who pays the actor $1 million to attend his birthday party. But when Javi’s bash spirals out of control, Nic must summon the personalities of some of his most iconic characters to get himself out of the ensuing mess. I seriously cannot WAIT for this movie, which is currently slated to hit theaters in April.
Cage also has two Westerns—The Old Way and Butcher’s Crossing—in addition to The Retirement Path, coming out this year. I’m getting the sense that perhaps Cage might be primed for a career revival the likes of the McConaissance that Matthew McConaughey experienced a decade ago.
If you’re in the mood to celebrate Nic’s 58th birthday, then we have FIFTY – that’s right, FIFTY of his movies at Redbox just waiting for you. And if you’ve never seen some of his classics, may I be so bold as to recommend:
- Raising Arizona
- Matchstick Men
- Con Air
- The Rock
- National Treasure and National Treasure: Book of Secrets
AND to make the birthday celebration a little sweeter, you can find 8 of Nic’s movies streaming On Demand for FREE!
We hope this birthday is a great one, Nic!
