Today is National Dessert Day, another one of these faux “holidays” I can really get behind! I’m the kind of person who will order dessert No. Matter. What., so you can bet I’m paying attention when film characters treat themselves to something sweet.
Here are some of the best movie desserts, IMHO.
The many, many cakes and treats in Marie Antoinette – In Sofia Coppola’s 2006 historical drama, Kirsten Dunst plays the Queen of France who’s attributed with saying “Let them eat cake” — the “them” being starving citizens of her country, who eventually revolted while she was cluelessly and callously living large. There’s one scene where she’s surrounded by stacks and stacks of desserts, and it immediately makes me drool.
Alllll the chocolate from Chocolat – In this 2000 Best Picture nominee, Juliette Binoche plays a chocolatier and Johnny Depp plays her love interest in a small French village where most of the townsfolk are uptight and repressed. But with but one taste of Juliette’s chocolates, their eyes are opened and their lives are changed. Or maybe I’m just thinking of my own experience with chocolate?
Pretty much everything from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory – While my favorite is the 1971 classic starring Gene Wilder, you may prefer the 2005 remake, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Johnny Depp. Or maybe we’ll all end up loving the prequel — Wonka, coming out in 2023 with Timothée Chalamet in the starring role — the best. Regardless, the sweets and treats in the chocolate factory are the stuff of my wildest dreams and I wish it was all real. I so, SO wish it was all real. I’d do whatever it takes to get a golden ticket!
The milkshake from Pulp Fiction – Before Uma Thurman’s Mia Wallace participates in an on-stage twist contest with John Travolta’s Vincent Vega at a ‘50s diner, they share a $5 frosty drink and he exclaims, “$*%#%$, that’s a pretty %^!$*& good milkshake.” I believed him, and always remembered that line — hence this one making my list!
Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Bott’s Beans, and so much more from the Harry Potter films – I’m rereading this series right now with my son, and then after each book we finish, we watch the corresponding movie. And my oh my is there A LOT of dessert in these stories! From all of the magical treats the students bought at Honeydukes during Hogsmeade trips, to delectable final dishes during Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts, the Hogwarts kids had to have been on a constant sugar high.
What movie desserts have you always remembered?
