Did you know that today is National Grinch Day? Well, it is. And that on top of that, it marks the start of the 25 days of Grinch-mas. I gotta admit that I wasn’t aware of any of this until recently. But now that I’m in the know, I love what it’s all about: Grinch-mas encourages people to do good deeds in order to “grow their heart three sizes” just like the Grinch himself. And of course I’m talking about the main character in the beloved How the Grinch Stole Christmas! children’s book by Dr. Seuss.
But wait, there’s more! This year, National Grinch Day and the start of Grinch-mas just so happen to fall on Giving Tuesday, a global movement to encourage generosity and doing good. Never has such a movement been more relevant, huh?
After you’ve given back to your community, done something for those in need, donated to a cause you’re passionate about or performed a random act of kindness, it’s time to reward yourself with a movie that reflects the spirit of Grinch-mas.
Here are 8 movies where the bad guy’s heart succeeds in growing three sizes.
Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! – Of course I have to include all of the Grinch movies on this list! And there’s none better than the original 1966 animated adaptation featuring the voice of Boris Karloff. The made-for-TV movie gets a shiny new update in this “ultimate edition.”
Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas – In 2000, they took the exclamation point out of the title, brought in Jim Carrey as the Grinch and created a live-action adaptation that the whole family can enjoy.
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch – … And then 18 years later came the CGI-animated version from Illumination, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch voicing our big green antihero. This one is not only streaming through Redbox On Demand, but it’s also back in the Kiosk!
Terminator 2: Judgment Day – We don’t blame Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) for initially not believing that the same cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger) previously sent back in time to kill might now be on her side.
Despicable Me – The villainous Gru (Steve Carell) has a Grinch-like transformation thanks to three little girls he initially tries to exploit for a dastardly scheme.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 – Justice for Snape!
Thor: Ragnarok – In this most psychedelic of MCU movies, a certain god of thunder’s (Chris Hemsworth) devilish little bro (Tom Hiddleston) might prove to be a bit of a hero himself, if just barely.
Fast & Furious 8 – I’m not even going to attempt to give you hints about which character might be turning over a new leaf in the franchise’s most recent installment. But I can tell you that fast cars, explosions and nuclear weapons (!!!) are involved.
Happy Grinch-mas to all!
