One of the only bright spots in our country’s current situation is all of the hilarious memes, creative social media posts, and painfully true slogans that have made the rounds during our collective exasperation. Some of my favorites are “2020: 1 star, would not recommend,” the “My Plans / 2020” meme, the “If 2020 was a…”meme, and of course, the recent celebrity COVID calendar meme first kicked off by Reese Witherspoon.

Another great sentiment I saw and couldn’t agree with more was, “We’ll always have 2019.” So instead of continuing to wallow in despair about the plans I had and the movies I was looking forward to reviewing this year, I’m going to take a moment to appreciate what came to us on film in 2019. There’s more than enough to entertain us until we’re on the other side of this mess!

To jog your memory, here are some of the best 2019 movies that we have at the Box or on Redbox On Demand:

Avengers: Endgame – The #1 movie of 2019 is just what we need right now. Thanos = the coronavirus. The Avengers = doctors, nurses, scientists and essential workers.

The Lion King – Let’s go back to a time when “Hakuna Matata” status could be achieved.

Joker – If you actually like being totally disturbed and depressed about the state of humanity, then this is the pick for you.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – Keanu can always make us forget about reality. In fact, maybe none of this IS reality? Maybe there’s been a glitch in The Matrix? Save us, Neo!

Toy Story 4 – Woody, Buzz and their friends are always the cure for what ails us. And I think now I can identify with Forky’s existential crisis even more than I did before…

Us – A horror film that’ll stop you from wanting to go on that end-of-summer beach trip you’d been considering.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw – Fast cars, ridiculous stunts, The Rock, Jason Statham and Idris Elba. Sold!

Ford v Ferrari – More fast cars… only this is an amazing TRUE story starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale.

Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood – Quentin Tarantino mixes truth and fiction in this “modern fairy tale” set in Tinseltown in 1969. See why it was nominated for 10 Oscars — earning Brad Pitt a Best Supporting Actor statue!

Jumanji: The Next Level – Escape reality by joining some of the funniest actors and actresses on the planet in a magical video game.

Knives Out – A star-studded whodunit gives us something to look forward to in the future: its sequel!

It: Chapter Two – And finally, the only thing scarier than 2020? Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
