It’s National Underwear Day! Now here’s a holiday I can get behind. (Get it?) But seriously, when I found out that today was National Underwear Day, my first thought was, “Hmm… I think a lot of people have been celebrating National NO Underwear Day — every day since mid-March.”
Whether you’re all about that commando life or are all FAN-CEE and still wearing underwear these days, you can still celebrate today’s holiday with a movie. I’m not sure if we should be surprised by this, but there are a lot of movies with famous underwear scenes.
Captain Underpants – Duh!
Risky Business – Probably the most famous underwear scene on film is from this 1983 classic starring Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay, where Cruise slides into the frame in his tighty whities to the tune of Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock ‘n Roll.”
Swordfish – When Hugh Jackman barges in on fellow hacker Halle Berry unexpectedly, she reacts in the most badass way possible — pulling a gun on him in nothing but skimpy lingerie.
Bull Durham – Berry might look better than 99% of humankind while stripped down, but fans (including his then-future wife and castmate Susan Sarandon) didn’t think Tim Robbins was too shabby when he let it all hang out on the baseball diamond in this beloved 1988 sports comedy.
American Psycho (Christian Bale) – The scene is set for Christian Bale’s chilling performance as investment-banker-by-day/serial-killer-by-night Patrick Bateman during the film’s opening sequence, which features Bateman’s intense morning workout regimen, during which he sports nothing but white Perry Ellis boxer briefs and an icy blue eye mask.
Back to the Future – In one of the best scenes in this classic ‘80s time-traveling romp, the young version of Michael J. Fox’s mom (Lea Thompson) assumes his name is “Calvin Klein” thanks to his underwear.
Birdman – Who can forget poor Michael Keaton, stuck outside his Times Square theater in nothing but his skivvies, being chased by increasingly aggressive, picture-taking fans?
Bridget Jones’s Diary – And finally we come to Renée Zellweger as Bridget Jones, deciding between her sexy underwear and what Hugh Grant later describes as “absolutely enormous granny panties.”
This list could’ve gone on and on and on because there are a ton of movie scenes featuring actors and actresses in their unmentionables. Which ones will you be watching in honor of National Underwear Day?
