In a world where nothing seems certain anymore, there IS one thing we can count on: hot dogs. While concerts, theme parks and pretty much everything involving a crowd has been canceled over the past few months, Nathan’s July 4 Hot Dog Eating Contest carried on — albeit with no spectators and several safety measures put in place. It just wouldn’t have been the holiday weekend without it.

And now today is National Hot Dog Day! Believe it or not, there are a lot of movies where America’s favorite little sausage makes an appearance. Don’t believe me? Here are 13 of them!

Sausage Party – What timing! Hot dogs are the star of the show in this twisted animated (but definitely NOT for kids) comedy that is currently back in the Box. With an A-list voice cast including Seth Rogen, Michael Cera, Jonah Hill and more, you might find yourself surprised about the fairly deep questions its plot raises (in the midst of some seriously perverted and deranged dialogue and action, of course).

Ghostbusters  – It’s a real quick scene from the original 1984 classic, but it’s absolutely unforgettable. Everyone’s favorite green ghost, Slimer, stuffs himself with hot dogs while popping out of a hot dog cart in Manhattan.

Spider-Man 2 – Lots of Spidey fans consider this one of their all-time favorite scenes. To the tune of “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,” Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) appears to finally have some semblance of a normal life … which includes taking a big chomping bite out of a hot dog instead of donning his Spider-Man suit after he witnesses a police chase race by him.

Sudden Impact – In the fourth Dirty Harry film, everyone finally learns what will cause Clint Eastwood’s character to lose his cool: when someone puts ketchup on their hot dog. Millions of Chicagoans and New Yorkers would agree with him.

The Hard Way – Dirty Harry would have a total meltdown if he watched this action-comedy from 1991, because in it, Michael J. Fox and James Woods not only put ketchup on their hot dogs, but they also just eat them in a really gross way.

Accepted – In this 2006 comedy, a group of teenagers who are rejected from all of the universities they apply to decide to create their own college. One of its best scenes involves Jonah Hill in a hot dog costume. That’s all I’ll say!

Mean Girls – There’s nary a hot dog to be seen in this 2004 hit, but this line from Regina George’s (Rachel McAdams) “burn book” — “Made out with a hot dog!” — and the hilarious one-liner that comes afterward, make it deserving of a place on this list.

BASEketball – The creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, star in this goofy comedy about a made-up sport. It includes a brief but memorable scene involving Ernest Borgnine, CPR … and a hot dog.

Fools Rush In – In this rom-com, Salma Hayek proves her love for Matthew Perry by somehow getting him hot dogs from NYC’s legendary Gray’s Papaya chain — despite the couple being in Nevada.

The Break-Up – Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston’s doomed relationship begins because of a hot dog he buys her against her will during a Cubs game at Wrigley Field.

The Secret Life of Pets – The ultimate doggy heaven exists on earth for Max and Duke when they find (and go wild in) a hot dog factory.

Joe Dirt – David Spade’s janitor gets no respect from schoolchildren in a scene where they pelt him with hot dogs.

Meatballs – In Bill Murray’s first-ever movie about a horribly run summer camp, a really, really gross hot-dog eating contest goes down … and anyone having to watch it definitely LOSES. So, you know, this is definitely not a recommendation to watch this one!

Can you think of any other movies where a hot dog pops up? Now go on and enjoy this “holiday!”
