For more than a century, June 19 has been an integral day to remember in African-American history. This date, fittingly known as Juneteenth, signifies the iconic moment in 1865 when Union army general Gordon Granger publicly declared the freedom of all slaves in the state of Texas. Fast forward to 2020, Juneteenth is as relevant as it’s always been in the wake of recent and countless other tragic incidents of police brutality and systematic racism.
With these incidents fresh in our minds, we are highlighting a number of educational and powerful movies about what the Black community has been facing for hundreds of years, including 12 Years A Slave, Antwone Fisher, Harriet, The Hate U Give, Just Mercy, Malcolm X, Selma, and more.
Several of these movies are available to stream on Redbox On Demand right now for free.
