The final Star Wars film in the franchise’s 9-episode story arc has hit and as a huge fan of that galaxy far, far away, I couldn’t be more excited. Especially since a few days from now I was supposed to be having a blast with my husband and kids at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland, and those fun plans — like so many of yours, I know — had to be put on hold for a while.
So instead I will be re-watching Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker and cheering on my favorite characters, old and new. Speaking of new characters, here are 5 standouts in the final film.
Babu Frik – This miniature ET-looking droidsmith and code-breaker isn’t in the movie for very long, but he plays a critical role in getting our team of heroes some much-needed intel. He became an insta-meme-worthy character because of his enthusiastic “Hey-heeeeyyyyyyyy!” that we’re treated to twice in the film. Some fans are even lobbying for a spinoff devoted to him.
D-O – While I don’t think anything can ever top the OG droids — R2-D2 and C-3PO — I did fall in love with the fast-rolling BB-8 in The Force Awakens as well as his new buddy D-O in the final film. I love how excited he was about being saved by people who are actually kind to droids. Bonus trivia to impress your friends with: D-O is voiced by director J.J. Abrams!
Jannah – It’s always a risk to introduce new human characters into a universe like Star Wars’ at the very end of a decades-spanning story. But Jannah (Naomi Ackie)—a freedom fighter who helps Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) — immediately carved out her own space and made an impression on me. Fierce warrior women on horseback tend to do that!
Zorii Bliss – Another woman made her mark in the movie as well: Zorii (Keri Russell), a Spice Runner who shares a complicated past with Poe that may come back to haunt him and his friends. Zorii has one of my favorite lines in the movie when she says to Rey: “Not that you care, but I think you’re OK.” Squad goals.
Jet Troopers – One of the most heart-pounding sequences in The Rise of Skywalker involves our heroes fleeing from jetpack-wearing First Order Stormtroopers in a Mad Max-like chase across the desert sands of the planet Pasaana. To quote Finn, “THEY FLY NOW?!?!” So, so cool.
Aaaahhhhh now I really can’t wait to watch it again!
