There are some actors and actresses who seem to come in and out of the public eye in waves. Like all of a sudden they’ll have a bunch of high-profile movies released within a few months of each other. But Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of the few celebrities I can think of who has a consistent presence on the big (and small) screen. Maybe it has something to do with him also being one of the few stars I can think of that everyone seems to like! In addition to his general likability and bank-ability — he’s now one of the highest-grossing box-office stars alive — he also landed on Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People List again this year.
His popularity helped the Fast & Furious franchise skyrocket to new heights after he first appeared in Fast Five. Then they banked on him this year in their first-ever spin-off film: Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which just hit the Box and Redbox On Demand. In it, Johnson’s character Luke Hobbs is forced to partner with rebel ex-MIA agent Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) to fight a genetically altered cyber villain. Their bet paid off, with Hobbs & Shaw raking in nearly $759 million worldwide to date. My bet is that we’ll have a Hobbs & Shaw sequel in the future — wouldn’t you agree?
But Hobbs wasn’t the only role Johnson reprised this year. He’s also back as Dr. Smolder Bravestone in the sequel to 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Jumanji: The Next Level hits theaters December 13. On top of that, Johnson also produced and appeared as himself in the surprise hit Fighting With My Family, based on the true story of English WWE champion Paige.
When I look back on Johnson’s career, what’s remarkable is that — like I was saying earlier — he has been steadily cranking out films (and successful ones, at that!) for close to two decades. He’s always had at least one movie out per year since 2001, and some years he’s been in up to FIVE films. And let’s not forgot that he was also a WWF/WWE wrestler, has starred in Ballers on HBO since 2015, has been involved in multiple TV game shows, and has an apparel partnership with Under Armour. WHEN DOES THIS MAN SLEEP?!
If all of this has made you want to watch one of his movies, I don’t blame you. Thankfully, Redbox has more than 25 options for you to pick from. And since The Rock never rests, you can be sure he has big plans for the future as well, including Jungle Cruise (based on the famous Disney ride) co-starring Emily Blunt next summer. If the past is any indication, movie fans will continue to love everything he’s involved with.
