Remember that tense month or so at the end of the summer when it seemed like Spider‐Man got booted out of the MCU because Sony and Marvel couldn’t come to terms on their joint ownership of the franchise? That was the worst.
But all is well once again — the two entertainment giants worked it out, and Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker and his alter ego Spider‐Man for a third Spider‐Man‐centric movie due out in July 2021. As Marvel head Kevin Feige put it best, “Spider‐Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey‐verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
Phew. Crisis averted. And now you can remind yourself just why everyone loves this character so much because Spider‐Man: Far From Home has hit the Box and Redbox On Demand. Here are 3 of the reasons why I’m such a fan:
Peter Parker is awkward and relatable. Action scenes don’t really do it for me anymore. But I’ll always appreciate offbeat humor, and the Spider‐Man films are loaded with just that. Far From Home opens with a completely hilarious debrief of what went down at Parker’s high school and in his community after Thanos’s Snap wiped out half the planet. (It doesn’t sound like anything about that should be funny … but it is.) On top of that, there is so much teenage angst packed into the first half of the movie that it will have your sides hurting. Watching Peter try to act cool around his crush MJ (Zendaya) is both cringe‐worthy and laugh‐out‐loud funny.
Peter Parker has the best friend ever. I was thrilled that the equally nerdy and awkward Ned (Jacob Batalon) had a bigger role to play in Far From Home because I love him. And because his vacation‐set romance was so true to things I remember from high school that it really took me back to those days when your romantic relationships were all‐consuming. But Ned is always still a loyal BFF to Peter, and his competitive rivalry with MJ is pretty darn cute, too.
Everyone wishes they could websling and swing like Spidey. So yeah, Peter is a pretty great guy to root for overall no matter what. But when he dons his Spider‐Man suit, then I truly want to BE him and experience what it would feel like to soar across cities powered solely by spiderwebs.
I’m sure I needed to convince NO ONE reading this of how awesome Spider‐Man is. Which makes it all the more critical to watch the end credits of Far From Home — what happens in the mid‐credits scene made me straight‐up gasp in the theater, and I wasn’t the only one. I can’t wait to see how the ramifications of that scene play out … in 2021 (for sure)!
