In honor of Dark Phoenix arriving at the Box and Redbox On Demand, it’s time to ask one of my favorite questions: “What’s the best superpower?” Another way to think about it is, “If YOU could pick one superpower to have, what would it be?”
As you may know, Dark Phoenix is one part origin story and one part goodbye. We get to see how Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) went from having just “regular” mutant abilities to becoming all-powerful thanks to a straight shot of solar flare. And as Jean struggles with her dangerous new strength, we get to bid something of a farewell to some of the mutants the franchise has focused on for years.
I don’t think it’s fair to include Phoenix’s über‐powers on this list. Nope, we gotta keep it to very specific mutant abilities. Here are the three I think would be the most ideal.
1) Teleportation (Nightcrawler, played by Kodi Smit‐Mcphee) – I wanted this power even before I knew anything about the X‐Men (or Harry Potter, for that matter). Think of all the time and money you’d save on commuting, plane trips and vacations if you could just zap yourself to another place far, far away at will. That’s why it’s #1 on my list by a wide, wide margin. And quite frankly I don’t think Nightcrawler takes enough advantage of all the cool places he could visit (when he’s not fighting off bad guys or saving the world).
2) Superspeed (Quicksilver, played by Evan Peters) – I’ll be the first to admit I’m an awful procrastinator. Nothing seems to motivate me like the last minute. So if I could move with superspeed, I could get more done in a shorter amount of time and wait even longer to getting started on tasks I’m dreading. But seriously, I think Quicksilver always has the coolest sequences in the X‐Men films, so for that reason alone I want his power.
3) Shapeshifting (Mystique, played by Jennifer Lawrence) – A lot of people think that invisibility would be the ultimate superpower. But shapeshifting goes one step further: you (as yourself) actually are invisible to others, plus you get to morph into whatever other kind of person or creature you want for a bit and literally walk in their shoes. So you don’t even have to worry about bumping into stuff or blowing your cover like you would if you were truly invisible. Ah, the people I would love to turn into for a day…
I know some people out there think I’m wrong. So let’s hear it: what mutant power would you want?
