People have described me as Type A, a worrywart, an extreme planner … you get the picture. But since opposites attract, I actually dated my fair share of stoners back in the day. Perhaps it’s because I went to the University of Michigan, home to the annual Hash Bash. Regardless, I have an appreciation for stoner culture, including stoner movies that are guaranteed to help chill you out.
Here are 15 “chill-out” classics:
The Beach Bum – Yes, this one is a classic even though it only came out this year (and is now at the Box and On Demand!). Matthew McConaughey stars as a hedonistic stoner named Moondog, whose free‐living (and free‐loving) ways are at risk of coming to an end after he’s cut off from his wife’s (Isla Fisher) money. Snoop Dogg, Jonah Hill and Jimmy Buffett (yep, the singer) also star. You just need to see this movie to believe it.
Friday – In this 1995 comedy that gave us the phrase “Bye Felicia,” we get to spend a day on the porch with Craig (Ice Cube) and Smokey (Chris Tucker) as they witness the comings and goings in their neighborhood while scheming on how to pay $200 back to a particularly crazy drug dealer named Big Worm.
All of the Cheech and Chong Movies – Redbox On Demand has 7 of the lovable comedy duo’s classics, spanning from 1978 to 2013: Up in Smoke, Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie, Nice Dreams, Still Smokin’, Get Out of My Room, Hey Watch This and Cheech and Chong’s Animated Movie. Without stoner‐comedy pioneers Cheech and Chong, the rest of the movies on this list might not even exist!
Pineapple Express – Seth Rogen and James Franco play two stoners on the run from hitmen after witnessing a murder. This movie is flat‐out bonkers, and also the most violent one on this list. These poor bros definitely deserve some chill time by the end.
The Big Lebowski – Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski has become something of a mythical slacker cult hero at this point, so it’s hard to believe that this movie didn’t do that well when it first came out in 1998. It’s a crime caper case of mistaken identity infused with too many zen quotes of wisdom from The Dude to even attempt to cover here.
The Harold & Kumar trilogy – Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, and A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas follow the escapades of stoner friends (John Cho and Kal Penn) that are first put in motion thanks to their intense craving for White Castle sliders. If you’re looking for ridiculously silly antics, these are the films for you.
Dude, Where’s My Car? – If you’ve ever partied so hard you can’t remember critical things the next day — like where you left your vehicle — you will be able to relate to Jesse (Ashton Kutcher) and Chester (Seann William Scott), who are about as dumb as they come. And I can’t even lie and say this is a good movie like most of the others on the list because of its extraordinarily lame jokes and plot, so perhaps in a weird way that means it’s the quintessential stoner classic?
