Ah, young love. It’s the sweetest thing on earth, until tragedy strikes. And strike it does in these 3 movies, which have set the bar for teen tearjerkers to come.
Five Feet Apart – In this heart‐wrenching drama that’s new to the Box and On Demand, we meet Stella (Haley Lu Richardson) and Will (Cole Sprouse), two hospital‐bound cystic fibrosis patients who are each mandated to stay six feet away from other people due to the risk of infection. Stella is a rule follower, but Will is a bit of a rebel who’s determined to push the envelope. Since opposites attract, they of course fall for each other, making their physical constraints all the more tempting to break despite the potentially dangerous consequences.
The Fault in Our Stars – This one is the definition of a “three‐hanky film,” so come prepared with a box of tissues. Based on John Green’s 2012 best‐selling novel, it stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as Hazel and Gus, two teenage cancer patients who meet at a support group session and eventually fall in love while bonding over the search for a cherished book’s mysterious author. It’s the kind of movie where you can feel in your gut that something terribly devastating is lurking around the corner, and I assure you, it is.
A Walk to Remember – These six words set the stage: Based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. So you know that if you have a heart, you’re going to be a sobbing mess by the end. Mandy Moore stars as the sweet Jamie, who meets up with bad boy Landon (Shane West) when he’s forced to participate in service projects after a run‐in with the law. One of those projects is the school play, and the polar opposites grow close while Jamie mentors him. Their relationship deepens until a horrible secret is revealed that threatens to derail everything.
