Can you think of any celebrities you wouldn’t want to run into in real life because you’d be too disappointed if they ended up being rude or dismissive? I have a few such stars on my list.

But someone who I’d loooooove to meet in person is Sterling K. Brown — he comes off as one of the nicest, coolest guys on the planet to me, and that impression was confirmed by his hilarious and thoughtful responses on The Predator panel I got to go to at Comic-Con.

It seems like Brown is suddenly everywhere these days, but the reality is he’s been gracing our TV sets since 2002 when he had a 9-episode arc on Third Watch. He had a much longer run on Lifetime’s Army Wives from 2007-2013, but I never watched that show, either. So I personally didn’t know much about him until 2016, when his portrayal of conflicted prosecutor Christopher Darden in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story earned him his first Emmy. I clearly wasn’t the only one to think “This guy is a STAR!!!” because, um, obviously he went on to win the Emmy … but then he also was back in our homes later in 2016 for the series premiere of the now-crazy-popular NBC drama This is Us, and he won an Emmy for his role on that, too!

As you probably know, This is Us just started its third season, and on it Brown plays Randall Pearson. Randall is probably in my top three favorite TV characters of all time, and in my head I kinda believe he is a real person just to make me feel better about the state of humanity.

So now it’s October 2017 and Brown has 2 Emmys and a role in the film Marshall, which stars Chadwick Boseman as Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in his earlier years. Brown had had 9 small roles on the silver screen before that point, but it’s clear that 2016/17 was when his career really rocketed into the stratosphere.

What I find especially fascinating is that just 4 months later in February 2018, Brown was technically reunited with Boseman in Black Panther, but the two shared no screen time together. However I’m sure they’re both OK with that since the film was a huge success and the third-highest-grossing movie EVER in the United States (behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avatar.)

Now Brown’s latest movie has just arrived at the Box: Hotel Artemis. It’s a slick, future-set action thriller about a secret hotel/hospital for criminals, and Brown plays one of those criminals opposite Jodie Foster, whose character runs the place. If you’re looking for something original, check it out!

So what’s next for Sterling? He’s currently on the big screen in The Predator, back on the small screen in This is Us, and has 3 movies coming out in 2019: The Angry Birds Movie 2, The Rhythm Section (an action thriller starring Jude Law and Blake Lively), and Waves (a musical drama from It Comes at Night director Trey Edward Shults.)

I am so happy about all of Brown’s success. But I gotta say, I’m selfishly scared that that same success might cause him to want to leave This is Us before fans like me are ready. For now, I’ll push that thought out of my mind and try to enjoy what comes next for the man who quickly became one of my favorite actors.
