If the Movie Breaks, Can MacGyver Fix It?

A quick analysis of recent Hollywood project announcements shows that there are two clear trends emerging as studios plan out their slates for 2010, 2011 and beyond.

The Powers That Be have decided it's a good idea to:

1)  Remake as many classic '80s movies as possible

and

2) Find a way to bring each and every remotely popular old-school board game to the big screen

I dare say that a third movement is now officially in the air  -- beloved '80s television series are the newest sources of cinematic inspiration.  An adaptation of Dallas has been in the works for years, rumblings of a Magnum P.I. feature flick abound, and at the end of January we discussed The A-Team movie, so it should really come as no surprise that MacGyver will also be landing in a theater near you in the not-too-distant future.  Granted, there had already been somewhat of a MacGyver resurgence thanks to the SNL MacGruber skits (even though at this point they've grown really tiresome).  Still, I can't help but wonder if feature film versions of Mr. Belvedere or Perfect Strangers can be that far behind at this point.  Oh wait -- maybe we already got a Perfect Strangers movie in the form of Borat?

Anywho, if you need a refresher on MacGyver, below is its opening sequence.  Definitely not as catchy as some of the other theme songs from that decade, but who can be bothered with, you know, words when there are countless lifesaving gadgets to create out of paper clips and spit?

Go figure, when you can't come up with any new material, just redo something from the past that
was successful. How creative. I think we pay them

For me, nothing would top a gritty, Michael Mann-style film remake of Hawaii Five-O. And, no, I'm not kidding!
