As a dog-lover and owner of a Labrador, I could never bring myself to read John Grogan's bestselling Marley & Me. I didn't really need to know anything that happened in the book -- I was sure I'd bawl my head off no matter what. That's why I won't be seeing its big screen adaptation, either.
It doesn't help that I'm not a Jennifer Aniston fan, or that I think a movie about a dog constantly getting into trouble would grow tedious after about twenty minutes. However, despite my own reasons for not planning to check this one out, I'm positive that Marley & Me will do well in theaters this week. In fact, I think it will actually reign supreme over the slew of films that open across the next few days, including Valkyrie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Spirit, Bedtime Stories and Revolutionary Road.
Aside from Bedtime Stories, Marley & Me is the only family-oriented film in that list, and it's more accessible and season-appropriate than, say, Tom Cruise fighting Nazis or Leonardo and Kate depressing the heck out of everyone with the story of a strained marriage. As far as Bedtime Stories is concerned, I think the fact that so many people loved Grogan's 2005 memoir is what will give the doggy an edge over Adam Sandler's latest. If I'm right, then I've got to remember to bust out my video camera the next time my dog runs wild around my condo, knocking over lamps and furniture in his wake. I could have a blockbuster on my hands!
i too, cannot and will not read (and probably will never see) marley and me...
i was in the bookstore the other day, and i flipped through it...
and somehow managed to find myself towards the end..
*SPOILERS*
and i guess they had to put the dog to sleep or something...
needless to say, the ONE sentence i read had me full on crying..
definitely will not be reading the whole book anytime soon, lol :)
but i agree, i think it will end up on top... dogs seem to be doing well this year!
