Call me sheltered, but I didn't realize that there was a Heavy Metal magazine. Nor was I aware that in 1981, an animated film was produced from the stories in said magazine (see its poster to the left). I was equally as clueless about the sequel that came out in 2000. But I do know that a bunch of heavy-hitting Hollywood honchos (say that three times fast) are on board to make yet another film adaptation of the tales from this "adult science fiction and fantasy" publication.
Directors Gore Verbinski (The Ring and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise), Zack Snyder (300 and the upcoming Watchmen), and Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labryinth, the Hellboy franchise and the highly anticipated Hobbit movie) all want to join producer David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac) in his effort to bring a new version of Heavy Metal to the screen in 2010.
But it hasn't been smooth sailing so far. It seems that Fincher was upset that the powers that be at Paramount (the studio originally contracted to produce Heavy Metal) wanted him to edit down another film he was making with them: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. You know, the one starring Brad Pitt about a man who ages backward. Anyway, Fincher is not one who likes to be told what to do with his movies.
So he pulled Heavy Metal from Paramount (or they dropped it, depending on which rumor you listen to) and it's now being handled by Sony Entertainment.
There's already been so much drama with this movie that I can't imagine there won't be any more, especially with that many famous directors in the mix. So we'll have to stay tuned on this one. But in the meantime, is it just me, or does that movie poster remind anyone else of the most awesome video game ever, Joust?
