As you probably know, Ocean’s 8 is the all-female spinoff of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise, with Sandra Bullock playing Danny Ocean’s (George Clooney) sister Debbie. Like her big bro, Debbie is also a thief, and while she was in jail for her latest misdeeds, she cooked up a plan to steal a $150-million necklace from a ditzy actress (played by Anne Hathaway) at New York City’s Met Gala. Upon her release, she brings in her literal partner-in-crime Lou (Cate Blanchett), and the job is on.
Debbie and Lou proceed to assemble a crew that includes Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Crazy Rich Asians’ breakout Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter and Mindy Kaling. JUST the kind of star-studded girl-power fun that makes for a perfect night with friends. Bonus: there are a ton of celebrity cameos during the Gala sequence.
Here’s how you can turn your Ocean’s 8 Girls’ Night In into something special:
The magic number: This isn’t a must, but it would be pretty cool if you could have a total of 8 friends at the get-together. Then you could match up each guest with one of Debbie’s crew to cheer on. If you have more people, you could double up as needed … fewer, and your friends could be rooting for more than one sneaky lady.
Make it a Double Feature: If your guests are up it, you could screen The First Monday in May before Ocean’s 8 to set the mood. This amazing documentary is about as star-studded as the main feature because it’s about pulling together the 2015 Met Gala and its spectacular fashion exhibit, China: Through the Looking Glass.
Ambiance: I personally think that red, gold and silver would be great color schemes to use for decorating either your viewing area or maybe a dining area as well. Break out your fanciest dishes and stemware — even if they’re only used for popcorn and soda or yummy mixed drinks!
Glamour: The Met Gala is Manhattan’s fashion event of the year, with A-list stars coming out to show off their (usually amazing, sometimes peculiar) gowns and outfits that are inspired by that year’s theme. Depending on what your friends are up for, you could go one of two drastically different ways: 1) you could all get dressed to the nines in formalwear as if you were going to the gala yourselves, or 2) you could do the exact opposite and come in either casual clothes or comfy pajamas BUT still require sunglasses and costume jewelry for everyone. Either way, get ready to snap lots of selfies!
Swag: Since the feared and revered editor-in-chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour (the inspiration for Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada), chairs the Met Gala every year, you could send everyone home with the latest edition of Vogue. In fact, the September issue is the magazine’s most notorious — there’s even a fascinating documentary about it called, um, The September Issue!
Whatever you decide to do for your special girls’ night in, we hope you have a blast. We know you’ll love the movie!
