Who remembers the world before emojis? Or maybe the question should be, who even wants to remember the world before emojis? Emojis make everything better and funnier. It’s like the old saying “a picture’s worth a thousand words” — just one emoji can communicate so, so much.

In researching today’s special holiday, World Emoji Day, I came upon a ton of interesting facts:

  • The reason World Emoji Day is July 17 is because that’s the date shown on the iOS Calendar emoji. And that’s the date that was used for the emoji because iCal for Mac was first announced on July 17, 2002 at MacWorld Expo.
  • The most-used emoji last year — by far — was “Face with Tears of Joy” ?
  • 157 new emojis will be coming to a phone near you later this year — here’s the list
  • The original set of 176 emojis debuted in 1999 and was recently added to the Museum of Modern Art’s collection in New York
  • World Emoji Day was first celebrated in 2014

We even found this cute little video about last year’s celebration, featuring some of the voice cast of The Emoji MovieUm . . . you didn’t think we WEREN’T going to mention The Emoji Movie today, did you?

But of course that’s not the only movie-related way to tip your hat to our favorite little icons. You could always invite some friends over for movie night and decide which movie to rent by communicating solely in emojis.

We put together a list of some of our favorites. Can you figure them out?
