If you’re like me, you’re one of those people who never sees a big plot twist coming. But since I love to be surprised, I’m totally fine with my generally clueless nature as a movie-watcher. It makes those “gotcha!” moments all the more fun when you don’t figure them out beforehand.
Here are 6 movies that turned my mind inside out with their twists:
Every Day – What would you do if you fell in love with someone — or I guess someone’s soul or spirit — who inhabits a different physical body each day? That’s the premise of this adaptation of David Levithan’s best-selling novel of the same name. Get ready to think some deep thoughts after this one!
One Day – This romantic drama was also originally a beloved novel, and it stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess as Emma and Dexter — a kinda-sorta couple who first meet at their college graduation in 1984 and then spend all of the next day (July 15) together. After they go their separate ways, the movie continues to check in on both of them throughout their lives, but ONLY on July 15.
The Crying Game – This is a movie that is truly hard to classify or say much about without giving away its big reveal. What I can tell you is that if you haven’t seen it, you must. Its haunting story about Irish terrorists (Stephen Rea and Miranda Richardson) and their hostage (Forest Whitaker) earned 5 Oscar nominations (including Best Picture) and scored the gold statuette for Best Original Screenplay.
Split – From the master of the “twist ending” (writer/director M. Night Shyamalan) comes a story about Kevin (James McAvoy), a man with 23 distinct personalities, and what happens when one of those personalities abducts 3 teenage girls. McAvoy’s performance will blow. you. away. As will the final final final scene (assuming you’re familiar with M. Night’s other movies).
The Usual Suspects – This 1995 Oscar winner is a master class in how to keep audiences guessing when an answer might be right under their noses. It follows the aftermath of a brutal massacre and the hunt for a mysterious mob boss known as “Keyser Söze,” and features one of the all-time greatest movie characters … though I can’t say who it is without giving something big away!
Get Out – I’m just now realizing something about twist-filled movies: they win a lot of Best Original Screenplay Oscars! As did this box-office smash and Best Picture nominee that stars Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams as an interracial couple who uncover horrifying family secrets.
What other movies have completely thrown you with unexpected zigzags in their plot?
