Today kicks off Pet Appreciation Week, so what better time to call out some of our favorite furry film friends?

Here are 4 that I think are extra special:

Marley the dog from Marley & Me

I remember when this entire country was engulfed in Marley Mania after John Grogan’s best-selling book came out. Everyone loved the spunky yellow Lab who makes a ton of trouble for his newly married owners. In the 2008 film adaptation, Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston play those owners who put up with Marley’s antics throughout several life milestones and come to realize what a critical member of their family he is. But I don’t think I need to tell anyone that the ending of this movie is an epic tearjerker!

Babe the pig from Babe

I love how this 1995 dramedy became such a big hit. Because, I mean, let’s face it — if you were a Hollywood exec being pitched a movie about a talking pig who wants to be a sheepdog, you’d probably be like “Umm … no.” But everyone ended up falling for the little piggy who could (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh), and I know people who still quote the film’s most famous line by Farmer Hoggett (James Cromwell): “That’ll do Pig. That’ll do.”

Toto the dog from The Wizard of Oz

What would this 1939 classic be without Dorothy’s doggy? I mean this quite literally: if Dorothy hadn’t run away with Toto because she thought he was going to be put down by a mean neighbor, they wouldn’t have gotten caught in a tornado and subsequently whisked away to Oz! “Oh, Toto … I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore” is right! And without Toto escaping the Wicked Witch of the West’s castle, the Scarecrow, the Lion and the Tin Man would’ve never been able to find Dorothy and rescue her. And let’s also not forget which character is responsible for revealing the Wizard of Oz’s true identity. (That’s right, it was Toto. And by the way the doggie’s name in real life was Terry!)

Hedwig the owl from the Harry Potter Movies

Think of the haunting, gorgeous Harry Potter title music, which kicks off all the series’ seven films. Dun DUN da-da dun, da daaaaaa daaaaaa, dun, da-da dun, da dun. (If you actually followed that, then consider yourself “my people.”) Do you know what that piece from the incomparable John Williams score is actually called? “Hedwig’s Theme.” Yes, Harry’s pet owl, who’s responsible for the delivery of messages and serves as a friend to the young wizard as he grows up, is also the inspiration behind some of the most memorable movie music of the past few decades. Her courageous act of love and sacrifice for Harry in the final film surely makes her one of the best movie pets of all time.

Apologies to all the “cat people” out there! (Or more like sorry, not sorry.) This is my list and I’m sticking to it! Which little stars of the big screen would you have picked?
