I loved Black Panther, as did most of the world (can someone say $1.3 billlllliiiion worldwide?). But when I walked out of the theater, it wasn’t T’Challa himself who’d made the biggest impression on me… which led me to create this list of my 6 favorite Marvel characters that DON’T have superpowers. I know people feel strongly about this kind of thing, so I want to apologize upfront to all of the Pepper Potts fans. [Crickets.]

Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) – I admit that May hasn’t had that much air-time between her appearances in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming — and I get that some people were annoyed that they didn’t pick an actress who was significantly older than Tomei in order to keep in line with the elderly character from the comics. But I for one am happy about the casting, because, come on, May’s giddiness around and romantic tension with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is hilarious.

Ned (Jacob Batalon)Spider-Man: Homecoming has a second “normal” character that I loved as well: Ned, Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) best friend, who accidentally finds out about his buddy’s alter-ego and is one part star-struck and the other part helpful sidekick.

Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) – Marvel fans LOVE this guy. And the crazy thing is that while he didn’t even have that big of a role in the comics, he’s now the character with THE MOST screen-time across the MCU, appearing in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, The Avengers and the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Word is he might also appear in Captain Marvel coming up later this year. He’s just a good man doing his job — someone everyone likes and respects.

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) – Only someone as cool as Jackson could pull off playing the man who first assembled the Avengers. He’s appeared in 8 MCU films so far, and (light spoiler territory here) had one of my favorite lines during the end-credits sequence in Avengers: Infinity War.

Okoye (Danai Gurira) – I’ve been a fan of Gurira’s for years thanks to her role as the katana-wielding Michonne on The Walking Dead, but I think even if I’d never watched that show I would’ve still loved her as the fierce Okoye, head of the all-female Dora Milaje (Wakanda’s Special Forces and T’Challa’s bodyguards). She has some of Black Panther’s (AND Avengers: Infinity War’s) best facial expressions and best fight moves.

Shuri (Letitia Wright) – While this list isn’t ranked, if it were, Shuri would be my pick for #1 best Marvel character who’s not a superhero. She was my absolute favorite part of Black Panther, and I’d like to start lobbying for a Shuri spin-off already! On top of her teenage energy and playful relationship with her brother T’Challa, she has the movie’s funniest lines and the coolest technology in the MCU. It’s fair to say that everyone is anxiously awaiting the first time she humbles Tony Stark with her mad skills and gadgets!
