Danny and Sandy. Rose and Jack. Scarlett and Rhett. There are so many incredible movie couples that it would be impossible to try to list them all. (Fun fact: my wedding reception’s theme was “Movie Couples” and the head table was “Westley and Buttercup” in honor of the duo from The Princess Bride, my all-time favorite movie.)
But there’s another list of movie couples that’s quite different from the aforementioned epic pairs. I call it “Couples that Make You Go Hmm…”, and here are 4 of them that top that list!
1. Reynolds Woodcock and Alma Elson in Phantom Thread: Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis, in the final role of his career … which earned him his sixth Best Actor nomination) is a high-society fashion designer who’s utterly obsessed with not only his work, but also his star models. He sets his sights on Alma (Vicky Krieps), a simple waitress he meets on holiday. She soon succumbs to Woodcock’s charms, moves in with him and becomes his muse. But when their relationship grows strained because of Woodcock’s controlling personality and explosive temper, Alma decides that two can play at his game. I can’t say anything else without spoiling the film’s big twist, but just trust me—these two are whacked out!
2. Lars and Bianca in Lars and the Real Girl: You know Ryan Gosling’s a great actor because in this 2007 movie he actually convinces you that he’s an awkward schlub named Lars Lindstrom who falls head over heels for a blow-up doll and takes her with him everywhere. I love me some RG, but that ain’t right!
3. Theodore Twombly and Samantha in Her: In the not-so-distant future, the lonely and depressed Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) falls in love with his operating system. Or rather he falls in love with “Samantha” (Scarlett Johansson), the voice of his operating system. Samantha’s artificial-intelligence-driven personality captivates Theodore to the point where he might soon forget how to have normal human interaction. Hmm… I think I already know some people like that in the PRESENT day!
4. Edward and Kim in Edward Scissorhands: They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that’s certainly the case in this 1990 classic starring Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp (who were dating in real-life at the time) as a star-crossed pair who can’t get physically close because Edward has gigantic scissor blades for hands (and also happens to be immortal).
What other movie couples have made you go “Hmm…”?
