Today, Matt Damon turns 47! One of my favorite Hollywood moments will forever be when he and best bud Ben Affleck freaked out on stage together after winning the Academy Award for Best Screenplay for Good Will Hunting, which they burst onto the scene with in 1997. (That was 20 years ago?!)
In the decades since, Matt has obviously proven himself to be more than a one-hit wonder and — on top of being involved with several charities and causes close to his heart, including co-founding the clean water nonprofit Water.org — is of the few A-list stars who’s succeeded in dramas (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Invictus), thrillers (Syriana, The Departed), comedies (Dogma, The Informant!), dramedies (The Martian) AND action franchises.
Speaking of action franchises, what better way to honor Matt’s birthday than by picking up one of his movies at the Box? In Jason Bourne he reprises his role as a memory-compromised assassin on the run. This time, he’s trying to learn more about his father before the CIA catches up with him.
If you’re in the mood for something a little more supernatural set in a bygone era, check out The Great Wall, in which Matt helps battle ancient, gigantic monsters alongside 11th-century Chinese warriors. You read that right.
And of course Damon has some exciting stuff coming to theaters in the near future, too. I personally can’t wait for the trippy-looking comedy Downsizing and the Coen Brothers/George Clooney-directed crime-comedy Suburbicon. Plus, he’ll be back again as Linus Caldwell in the upcoming female spin on the Ocean’s franchise, Ocean’s 8. I have a feeling that Matt is probably wishing for some downtime on his birthday, sheesh!
