In 2014, Jake Gyllenhaal starred in the indie Nightcrawler as a freelance videographer obsessed with being the first at gruesome crime scenes. His character pulls the young, innocent and desperate-for-money Rick into his world… and it doesn’t end well.
Gyllenhaal earned rave reviews for his riveting performance, but so did the newcomer who played Rick: Riz Ahmed.
Fast-forward a few years, and Riz is everywhere. In June he showed off his rap skills — that’s right, he also goes by Riz MC and is part of the group Swet Shop Boys — in the video for the chart-topping Hamilton Mixtape song “Immigrants (We Get the Job Done).” At the end of July, he popped up (alongside a huge pink teddy bear) in Charli XCX’s cameo-filled video for “Boys.”
On the small screen, he played an FBI psychologist trying to help Brit Marling’s deeply troubled Prairie in the Netflix series The OA, and then earned an Emmy nomination for his guest role in this year’s final season of HBO’s Girls.
Oh and he was also named one of Time’s Most 100 Influential People this year.
So of course you can find some of his work in the Box! He. Is. EVERYWHERE!!!
In Jason Bourne, Riz plays a social media company CEO who gets caught up in a mess involving the CIA . . . and let’s just say that he might need Matt Damon’s deadly ex-assassin Bourne to come to his rescue.
In Rogue One, he plays Bodhi Rook — a former Imperial pilot who decides to help the Rebels on their mission to steal the Death Star plans.
But that’s not all! We’re also excited to have the HBO series Riz starred in that just racked up TEN Emmy nominations this month: The Night Of. Riz earned one of those Emmy nods for his amazing transformation from naïve college student to hardened prisoner. It’s a must-see.
Currently, Riz is hard at work (surprise!) — and reunited with Gyllenhaal — on the set of the dark Western comedy The Sisters Brothers, which also stars Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly. Something tells us it’ll be great.
