Back in February, we interviewed Julie and Mike, a wonderful couple in Maryland who got engaged at a Redbox kiosk—much to her surprise! They tied the knot in mid-June, so now that they’re nearing their six-month anniversary, we thought we’d check in again and see how married life’s been treating them so far.
[If you missed our original chat, be sure to read that one first (complete with a picture of the infamous Redbox kiosk) here!]
So how was the big day? Did everything go as planned?
June 18th was the happiest day of our lives! Our wedding was perfect. We had a beautiful ceremony and reception on the water in St. Michaels. The Chesapeake Bay was a gorgeous background at Harbourtowne, but we were so lucky it didn’t rain. The band was awesome and everyone danced the entire time!
Well it certainly looks like a gorgeous setting from your pictures! We’re overjoyed to hear that everything went off without a hitch. Now refresh my memory for a second—after our initial chat, the Redbox team sent you some promo-code cards as we were so very honored that our company played a role in Mike’s proposal, and I believe you were planning to do something creative with those…
Yes, as part of a larger goodie bag of treats, we gave each guest a free Redbox movie rental tucked into a little red box filled with popcorn. They were so cute!
[Here's an inside view of the guest goodie bag, as well as the "Redbox red box" on its own.]
How’s married life been treating you two? What’s the biggest “lesson learned” so far that you want to share with other brides-to-be?
The wedding planning was pretty trying on our relationship, but we made it through and had a wonderful time. My advice for planning a wedding is to not to stress out. I had many sleepless nights leading up to the big day and had to remind myself it wasn’t about the party, but the person. I got to marry my best friend! Remembering that got me through figuring out the guest list, flowers, food, music, invitations, et cetera. I also had the best wedding planner in the world: my dad! He still signs his e-mails “wedding planner extraordinaire.”
In our previous interview you mentioned that you guys watch movies on a weekly basis, but that you don’t really have the same taste. Have you watched anything together recently?
We still love to watch movies and are able to do so more often now that the wedding planning is over. Recently we rented Thor and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Michael chose both action-packed movies, but I really did like Transformers. I’m hoping he’ll let me pick next time!
I’d say it’s definitely your turn to pick now! Are there any films coming up at the end of the year or in 2012 that you’re both particularly excited for?
For Michael’s birthday this summer his brother got us tickets to be extras in the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. It doesn’t come out until the summer of 2012, but we can’t wait!
Wow, that’s very cool. I’ll be on the lookout for you guys! Here’s one last question for you: I know it’s still six months away, but do you have any plans for or thoughts on how you’d like to spend your one-year anniversary?
I think we’ll travel somewhere local. Our honeymoon was quite a disaster so we’ll hopefully get to go on another one! Long story short, we had to switch hotels in Costa Rica, drove six hours using directions we couldn’t really read, and had to try and find a decent place to stay. But along the way we discovered Michael remembered Spanish from grade school (who knew?), and he became a great tour guide!
Well at least you’ll have a fun story for the grandkids about your honeymoon, right? Thank you so much for chatting with us again—we’re thrilled that your wedding day was a blast and that you’re now thoroughly enjoying your newlywed status. Congrats again!
