I’m one of those Americans who’s inexplicably obsessed with All Things Royal (yes, you can bet that I got up at the crack of dawn to watch Prince William get married this past April), and—like so many millions of people around the world—have always had a soft spot in my heart for the late Princess Diana. But I never condoned how the media hounded her endlessly while she was alive, and certainly haven’t approved of how the press simply can’t seem to let her rest in peace since her tragic death in 1997.
Considering what a beloved figure Diana was—and remains—I guess it’s actually kind of surprising that her life hasn’t been given the big-screen treatment already. While her death was the main plot point in 2006′s The Queen and there have been countless TV specials and small-screen dramas dedicated to her tumultuous marriage to and divorce from Prince Charles, there’s still been no feature-film biopic.
Now there’s word that the German Academy Award-nominated director Oliver Hirschbiegel is ready to take on at least part of Diana’s story: her secret two-year love affair with Dr. Hasnat Khan, with Hollywood It Girl Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life, The Help, Take Shelter) portraying Diana. The project is tentatively titled Caught in Flight and its producers are currently seeking funding. In a statement, Hirschbiegel stressed his film would depict heart surgeon Khan as a compassionate person, but the buzz from those who have seen early drafts of the screenplay report that the princess herself is cast as a “damaged person who stalks the doctor after he ends the affair.” (Diana began dating Dodi Fayed shortly after her break-up with Khan. Fayed also died in the 1997 Paris car crash that took Diana’s life.)
I, for one, am not in favor of a movie about Princess Diana any time soon. I have always felt oddly protective of Princes Will and Harry and just wish they could live as normal lives as possible without their mother’s memory being distorted (or, in this case, possible trashed) by the media and/or Tinseltown.
But I realize others might be eager to learn more about the elusive Diana. So what do YOU think about the plans for Caught in Flight?
