Comedy filmmaking brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly are hoping to revisit their very first film, 1994′s Dumb and Dumber, and it sounds like co-stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels could be back for the sequel.
In the ’90s Jim Carrey and the Farrelly Brothers were the kings of outrageous comedy movies. The Farrellys’ Dumb and Dumber launched the brothers’ brand of smartly low-brow humor, followed up by the even higher comic achievements of Kingpin (1996) and There’s Something About Mary (1998).
Dumb and Dumber also secured Carrey’s spot among Hollywood’s top comedy stars, capping off a year that included the first Ace Ventura and The Mask.
After the huge success of Mary, the Farrellys reteamed with Carrey in 2000 for Me, Myself & Irene, but then the laughs slowed down on both sides of the camera. The brothers tried to keep mining the Mary formula with movies like Shallow Hal and Stuck On You, but when it came to gross-out humor, they were getting flanked by the sharper social satire of South Park and more heartfelt filmmakers like Judd Apatow. They went for rom, not raunch com with 2005′s Fever Pitch, and then back to naughty with this year’s Hall Pass (which, to be fair, makes me giggle).
Meanwhile, Carrey still showed up for big family comedies, but over the past decade his creative attention and passions have been drawn to more serious and darkly skewed projects like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I Love You Phillip Morris.
But last this past summer, while doing press for Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Carrey began talking about the possibility of a Harry and Lloyd reunion, with Penguins scribes Sean Anders and John Morris (Hot Tub Time Machine) penning the script.
The Farrellys, Carrey, and Daniels had no involvement with the 2003 prequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd. But according to Deadline Hollywood, the Farrellys are interested in directing the Dumber sequel, now that they’ve completed shooting on their Three Stooges film.
(The Three Stooges is out in April 2012 and stars Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes, and Will Sasso as Moe, Larry, and Curly–see a picture of the new Stooges here.)
I’ve always been a bigger fan of Kingpin (let’s see that sequel, assuming we can find Randy Quaid), but I’d be happy to see the Farrellys and Carrey get back a little of their ’90s comic mojo.
What say you all? Ready for an older, no-doubt-dumber Harry and Lloyd from the Farrellys, Carrey, and Daniels? Or does this have “career desperation” written all over it?
