OK my dear friends, it’s confession time: How many of you are old enough to remember the TV series 21 Jump Street? It ran on FOX from ’87 – ’91, and starred this guy named Johnny Depp. Well, it starred a bunch of other people, too (Holly Robinson Peete, Peter DeLuise, Steven Williams, Dustin Nguyen, and Richard Grieco, to name a few), but I’d bet that only Depp is known to every single Redblog reader out there now that it’s 2011. His role on the show as baby-faced undercover officer Tom Hanson shot him to fame (much to his dismay), and it’s been pretty much nothing but the A-list for him ever since.
Since all things ’80s are the big rage in Hollywood these days, it was no surprise to learn that 21 Jump Street was going to be turned into a film. What was surprising was hearing that its stars are Jonah Hill (who also co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Bacall of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) and Channing Tatum. Not exactly a pairing I’d ever come up with on my own, but after watching the movie’s trailer, I actually have hope:
So the premise remains the same: Undercover cops infiltrate a high school in order to sniff out a drug ring. What’s different is that the adaptation appears much funnier than its source material. As well as more “adult”… let’s just say there’s a red-band trailer out there in circulation on the Interwebs. It’s coming to us from the directors of the children’s animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs—yet another thing to make you go “Huh?” about this one.
We’ll see if they were able to pull it off on March 12! Until then, chime in with how you think 21 Jump Street looks!
