Gettin’ Crafty with Zookeeper

Watching ZookeeperA few weeks ago we got wind of a mom (Colleen) and her son (David) in Michigan who built an arts-and-crafts project around one of the animals in Zookeeper, which they’d rented from Redbox. I was able to connect with Colleen, who writes the hilarious and popular Mommie Daze blog, and chatted with her a bit to learn more about both the project and her family’s love of movies.

Do you remember when you and your family first started using Redbox?

Colleen: I think we started using Redbox about two years ago. We live in a small town, so it took a little while for Redbox to get here. I’d heard about it from friends in larger cities. I was excited when they put one in the Walmart just 15 minutes from where we live.

David, are you usually the one to work the Redbox kiosk or do your parents do that after you tell them what you want?

David: I pick out the movie, and my parents get it for me.

How often would you say you guys rent from Redbox?

Colleen: About once a week. We usually pick up movies to watch on the weekends.

That’s what we like to hear! Why do you enjoy Redbox in particular?

Colleen: It’s just so fast and easy to use. Since it’s located at Wamart I don’t have to make an extra trip to a second store. There aren’t any late fees, no waiting for the movie to come in the mail, and you can’t beat the price.

OK, so now onto the cool project. How did you come up with the idea of making a wolf after watching Zookeeper?

Colleen: It was actually a project David and I did for my blog and Collective Bias, a social media company. We were supposed to watch the movie, then pick one of the animals to make.

David: I picked the wolf because he was cool!

Zookeeper Wolf

I very much agree with you on that. Wolves are always cool! So how long did it take you to make him?

Colleen: I think it took us an hour for the whole thing. We did it on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

And where is ol’ wolfie now?

David: In my room on top of my toy box.

I bet he likes the view from up there! So have you ever been inspired to build or make anything after watching any other movies?

Colleen: I remember David made a big car out of a cardboard box after watching Cars once. That was just on his own. I think this was the first time we actually planned it.

A few last questions for you about movies in general: What is your favorite movie, and why?

David: Toy Story. I like Woody. [David was Woody for Halloween.]

Colleen: I guess I’m kind of old fashioned and romantic. Gone with the Wind is my favorite. I was nine the first time I saw it. I fell in love with all the pageantry and drama. I remember I wanted to be Scarlett O’Hara.

And last one: Do you have a favorite actor and actress and if so, why do you like them?

David: I like that guy in The Spy Next Door who does karate.

Colleen: He means Jackie Chan. I’m probably dating myself a little, but I’ve always loved Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan. They were the “It” actresses when I was a teenager. I guess I sort of grew up on their romantic comedies like Pretty Woman and Sleepless in Seattle.

Well it’s been so fun talking with both of you! Thanks for sharing your experience with us, and for being such big Redbox fans!

(If you’d like to see exactly how David crafted his wolf, all of the details (and more pictures!) are here.)

Very creative! It seems like “the media” is inspiring us all to do something in our lives!
