When I visited the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame in Cleveland a few months ago, I had the pleasure of reading letters between Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner and writer Hunter S. Thompson that were on display. Thompson was clearly quite the character, but those letters are all the exposure I’ve ever had to the man responsible for creating the “Gonzo journalism” movement. I mean, I knew that Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was based on his life, but I’ve never seen it and really haven’t had the desire to. I haven’t read his novel The Rum Diary, either, but this trailer for its adaptation is piquing my curiosity a little bit, only because I appreciate any time Johnny Depp brings the funny. (And as you probably recall, Depp starred in the Fear and Loathing adaptation as well—Thompson and Depp were such good friends that Depp financed the author’s funeral in 2005, during which his ashes were fired from a cannon near his home in Colorado.)
My favorite part was the line about the mini-bar drinks. That’s probably why I also like the bottle version of the film’s poster the best. Well, that, and the fact that Depp is a little too nicely Photoshopped for my taste in the spot on the left.
So what do you think? Too weird for mainstream audiences? Or will the draw of Depp be enough?
We’ll see on October 28!
