When I first heard about Dream House, the latest film from six-time Oscar nominee Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father, Brothers), I was really confused. It sounded like a straight-up horror flick to me, which seemed out of character for both Sheridan and its stars—namely Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Naomi Watts. (OK, so maybe they’re not all strangers to horror films—The Ring, anyone?—but still, a scary movie seemed an odd choice for any of them at this point in their careers.)
It’s about a couple (real-life newlyweds Craig and Weisz) and their two daughters who relocate from New York City to the countryside, move into their new home, and then find out that some horrific murders took place there not too long ago. The plot details I’d read early on when the project was first announced led me to believe one of two things: 1) that the killer was still at large and stalking the scene of the crime in order to do harm to anyone else who settled in, or 2) that the house was haunted by the ghosts of the murdered family members.
Turns out it might be a little bit of both, accompanied by a huge twist that I wasn’t expecting. A huge twist that was totally spoiled by the trailer below. So let me warn you as I often do… but I really mean it this time: Don’t press play if you think a thriller with this cast and this director and this plot seems like something you might want to check out eventually. You’ll be mad. You all know I shy away from anything scary, and even I’m mad at the blatant Ruining of the Twist. All I can figure is that they revealed so much in order to (hopefully) attract those who wouldn’t see Dream House if they thought it was “just another scary movie.”
Still with me? OK… here you go.
It’s so very Shutter Island-ish, no? But scarier. I jumped a few inches out of my seat when there was the glass window smash at the 33-second mark and am mad about losing more years off of my life as a result. But I think the movie’s poster is even more damaging to my psyche and physical health than that trailer was. It’s waaaay too reminiscent of the two freaky little girls in The Shining for my taste.
Dream House hits theaters a one month from now on September 30. Will you be buying a ticket to see it?
And feel free to discuss the pros/cons of the trailer’s Twist Reveal in the comments.
