Normally I don’t get too worked up over early set shots or costume photos from upcoming geek movies. What counts is the final product in its entirety up on the screen, and no marketing image, poster, or trailer–no matter how interesting or cool–can really tell you about character, plot, tone, acting, pacing, dialog, and all those things that make movies (especially big blockbusters) work for me.
However, I do have a wee bit of a weakness for Ms. Anne Hathaway, as I’ve documented in shameless detail, so I found myself sneaking a geek peek at the image Warner Brothers released last week of her as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, out July 2012:
Couple things going on here, as best we can tell.
For starters, Warners’ hand on releasing the image last week was somewhat forced–they knew unofficial set images of this scene with Hathaway (or her stunt double) apparently stealing Batman’s BatPod cycle were about to hit the web. So this official studio image was rushed out to get ahead of the leaks.
That said, this picture is being presented as “Selina Kyle,” not “Catwoman,” leaving us to speculate as to whether there’s another more feline “Catwoman” costume used later in the film, or if this is it. Knowing Nolan and his drive to keep his Batman films as reality based as possible, I’m guessing this is the extent of the new film’s Catwoman–it’s possible Hathaway’s Kyle will be a cat burglar who might go by the nickname “Catwoman,” but may not go the full Julie Newmar/Eartha Kitt/Lee Meriwether/Michelle Pfeiffer/Halle Berry route as a costumed superhero/villain. Probably no ears or tails.
Finally, it’s clear Nolan and his costume designer Lindy Hemming are taking their cues from Ed Brubaker and Darwyn Cooke’s 2001 comic-book redesign of Catwoman’s outfit, which did away with the more form-fitting latex catsuit and instead went with a stylish look that was (relatively) more real-world functional, including the goggles. (Though as the unofficial side-shots of the character on the cycle show, her form is still very much, um, fit…)
While the mildly salacious Kyle/Catwoman pic is plenty catnip for the fanboys, Warners and executive producer Nolan also released a little sumthin’ for the lay-dees (and all fans of truth, justice, and the American way) last week too, with this first promotional shot of Henry Cavill in action as the new Superman in director Zack Snyder’s The Man of Steel (out June 2013):
Now that’s a superhero shot, eh? It’s obvious what Nolan, Snyder, and Warners are trying to say by releasing this image: This is not Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh’s pensive, brooding Last Son of Krypton from 2006′s Superman Returns–this Supes is truly a Man of Steel and action who’s not here to mess around.
As in Superman Returns, however, the costume colors do appear a little darker (though that could partly be the lighting) but that bigger-than-ever “S” shield and the very comic-booky steel door–not to mention Cavill’s awesome hair and granite jaw–seem in line with Snyder’s usual love of arch, stylized grandeur.
What do you guys and gals think of these two shots from Warner Brothers’ and Chris Nolan’s DC Superhero Factory?
