This past weekend tens of millions of folks got their first look at The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan’s 2012 conclusion of his Batman Trilogy: A brief teaser trailer played in front of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 and then officially hit the Interwebs yesterday. If you haven’t yet, take a look:
Lots of “legend” and “journey” talk, old clips from 2005′s Batman Begins, and a seriously hurting Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) begging Bruce Wayne to bring the Batman back. (Plus more dark and gloomy buildings from the Inception director. Does anyone else feel Christopher Nolan needs to spend a quiet, sunny afternoon sitting under a tree in a field? ”Have another strawberry, Chris. It’s going to be all right.”)
We also get a nice, exciting glimpse of Tom Hardy as the hulking villain Bane in his bondage gas mask. (Bane, comic-book readers will recall, broke The Batman’s spine in 1993 in the Batman comic, putting the Caped Crusader outta commission for a year. The character also, unfortunately, appears in 1997′s Batman & Robin movie, but please, we’re all still trying to forget.)
Also yesterday another teaser snuck (or was nudged) less “officially” onto the Web: Bootleg footage of The Avengers teaser that will play at the very end of Captain America: The First Avenger in theaters this coming weekend. I can’t embed it, but if you haven’t seen the Cap/Avengers footage yet and can’t wait for the weekend, check it out here.
Filming on The Avengers with director Joss Whedon began in April, and the teaser gives us quick action glimpses of Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner (the Hulk), and of course Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury.
The Avengers opens May 4, 2012; The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, 2012. So this has me wondering which Giant-Sized (no Giant Man pun intended) superhero movie are you folks most excited for next summer? I’m not asking which one you think will make more money, but which one has your anticipatory geek needle twitching the most?
Personally I suspect The Dark Knight Rises will be amazing, maybe even better than The Dark Knight. But deep in my geeky heart I was a Marvel Zombie long before I started reading DC, and I’m a hardcore Buffy/Angel/Firefly Whedonite. So yes, I’m most excited for The Avengers.
