Last February I wrote about how director Steven Soderbergh had decided to fast-track the development of Contagion, a film written by The Informant!‘s Scott Z. Burns about the worldwide spread of a deadly super-flu strain. In that post I also mentioned that although the nonfiction book The Hot Zone and the film Outbreak—which both cover similarly themed “global epidemic” horror stories—took a serious toll on my psyche in the mid-’90s, I still find it hard to keep away from such frightening oh-$#*%-this-could-really-happen! material.
And so it seems only fitting that the trailer for Contagion was released just as I’m coming to the end of Stephen King’s The Stand, an 1,100-page novel about a super-flu outbreak that kills most of the world’s population and leads to the ultimate battle of good versus evil among the survivors. Judging from the clips below, however, I’m not so sure anyone’s going to survive Contagion‘s nasty bug, which appears to take joy in wiping out A-list stars like it ain’t no thang.
“Someone doesn’t have to weaponize the bird flu. The birds are doing that.”
Aw, HELLS NAW!
This is not good, my friends. If Contagion‘s two-minute-thirty-second trailer terrifies me, how am I going to be able to sit through the entire movie without having a nervous breakdown? Especially when you KNOW some fool’s going to sneeze or cough loudly and/or grossly either during the film, or right as everyone’s crowded together, filing out of the theater afterward. I can’t bear it.
But before we’re all toast thanks to a nasty virus bug, let’s take a moment to appreciate the cleverness of Contagion‘s poster, shall we?
So what do you think? Will you be seeing Contagion once it spreads to theaters on September 9? (See what I did there? Lame, I know.)
