For years there’s been talk of a Space Invaders movie based on the pioneering late-’70s video game–now it appears it could happen! And you know what that means? The long-awaited Pong: The Movie can’t be far behind!
As Erika noted last year, Warner Brothers had been pursuing the rights to the Taito Corporation’s 1978 alien-invasion game, but the studio failed to seal the deal. Instead the rights ended up being purchased by Transformers and G.I. Joe producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Gigi Pritzker of Odd Lot Entertainment.
(Odd Lot was behind last year’s Rabbit Hole and the upcoming Drive. And if you’re a Chicagoan or an architecture fan, you’ll recognize Pritzker as a member of the wealthy Pritzker Family that owns Hyatt and sponsors the annual Pritzker Architecture Prize.)
All this might beg the question, um why? The game has no characters or back story, and the basic premise behind it is the same as every alien invasion movie from War of the Worlds to the upcoming Brit action-comedy Attack the Block: Aliens attack. From space.
But of course the existence of this very Yay, Nay, Maybe piece answers that question: As I noted two years ago with big-screen versions of Battleship and Barbie, studios and producers want to own the Space Invaders title for its instant, iconic brand-name recognition. It gets people’s attention, and sites–like this one–write about it, generating free publicity.
And with Transformers and G.I. Joe on his resume, di Bonaventura certainly knows his movie adaptations of ’80s pop-culture toys and games. He also has an Asteroids movie in the pipeline and a Pet Semetary remake.
So what say you all? Does the idea of a Space Invaders movie have you jumping for joy(stick) in your Atari jammies? Or rolling your eyes at yet another “how desperate is Hollywood?” endeavor?
And should the movie version have a visual nod to the game? Should there be at least one scene where neat, straight rows of aliens advance on our heroes’ little barricades by slowly shuffling to the left then back to the right? (Here’s an idea: Tell the entire film from the alien’s sympathetic perspective–make them the heroes and humans the pests!)
And does this mean maybe someday soon we will get to see Pong: The Movie?
Vote in the poll, and then explain your “yay,” “nay,” or “maybe” in the comments below!
