While watching the trailer for Killer Elite (which is, as you’ll soon see, not a remake of 1975′s The Killer Elite starring James Caan and Robert Duvall), two thoughts kept running through my head: 1) Why did they ruin Clive Owen’s hotness with that awful mustache?!?!, and 2) “Is that song what I think it is?”
I’ll probably never get an answer to my first question, but by the 1:17 mark I’d confirmed that yes, yes it was indeed that song.
I’d like to propose a slow clap which gains momentum and ends in a standing ovation for this trailer. Because it’s just like, “This is what this movie is — deal with it.” Statham fans are obviously going to love it. I mean, the guy takes down Clive Owen while tied to a chair, and then proceeds to catapult out of a window while being shot at… and he’s still in the chair. Classic.
The only thing a little shady about the trailer is the “Based on a True Story” part. Killer Elite, the first feature-length movie from Irish director Gary McKendry (who earned a Best Live-Action Short Film Academy Award nomination in 2005 for Everything in This Country Must), was adapted from 1991′s The Feather Men — which its author Sir Ranulph Fiennes claimed to be nonfiction. Fiennes is a renowned British adventurer/explorer (and third cousin of actors Ralph and Joseph) who’s chalked up endurance records and Guinness Book mentions like it’s no big deal, but there’s always been controversy surrounding The Feather Men. Since it’s not entirely clear from the trailer, the story is about an assassination squad (“The Clinic”) that targets members of the British Special Air Service and a separate group of vigilantes (“The Feather Men”) who work against them.
All I know for sure is that even if everything else in Fiennes’ book really did happen, there’s no way anybody but Statham could pull off that chair flip.
What do you think of the trailer for Killer Elite? Does this brand of nonstop action look like something you’d want to see more of in September?
