Get Pumped for the Academy Awards with Some Past Nominees!

Yesterday we discussed the Best Picture movie marathon that AMC Theatres is hosting in order for film fanatics to catch up on all of the 2011 nominees before the Academy Awards air on February 27. But if you’ve already seen the ten movies competing for the coveted Best Picture Oscar, another fun way to get psyched for the show is to revisit films that were in the running — or won — in the recent past.

And guess what? Five Best Picture nominees just so happened to make a return to redbox this week!

Slumdog Millionaire Slumdog Millionaire

An eighteen-year-old from the Mumbai slums gets a shot at 20 million rupees on India’s version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” and we see how defining moments in his childhood led him to this life-changing moment. This film by Danny Boyle won eight Academy Awards (including Best Picture), five Critics’ Choice Awards and four Golden Globes. Plus it has one of the best soundtracks of all time (still listening to it, in fact). Just see it already, won’t you?

Genre: Drama, Romance

Starring: Dev Patel, Freida Pinto

Available on DVD

Precious moviePrecious

Precious Jones, an inner-city high school girl, is illiterate, overweight, and pregnant… again. Naïve and abused, Precious sees a glimmer of hope when an alternative-school teacher reaches out to her. Will she take this rare opportunity to change her life for the better, or will she return to a violent existence with her hateful mother (played by Mo’Nique, who won an Oscar for her scary-intense performance)?

Genre: Drama

Starring: Gabourey Sidibe, Mariah Carey, Mo’Nique

Available on DVD

The Hurt LockerThe Hurt Locker

Here’s another Best Picture winner for ya — this is the one that beat out that movie about those blue creatures by that one director guy. It’s also the film that catapulted Jeremy Renner’s career. He plays Staff Sergeant James, head of an elite squad of soldiers tasked with disarming bombs in the heat of combat. James thrives in these life-and-death scenarios — so much so that he might not be able to function outside of the combat zone.

Genre: Drama, War

Starring: Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie

Available on DVD

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

From director David Fincher comes the incredible story of a backward-aging Brad Pitt. Benjamin Button was born as an eighty-year-old, and grows younger and younger with each passing year (you just kinda need to see it to understand). During that time he falls in love with Cate Blanchett — but could a romance THIS complicated ever possibly work?

Genre: Drama, Romance

Starring: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Taraji P. Henson, Tilda Swinton

Available on DVD

Up in the Air Up in the Air

George Clooney loves being on the road — he’s a traveling “corporate downsizer,” and when we meet him he is taking a new and incredibly outgoing employee (Anna Kendrick) under his wing. She soon finds out, of course, that telling people they’ve lost their jobs isn’t all it’s glammed up to be… while Clooney is finding out that a fling he’s been carrying on with Vera Farmiga in different cities across the country isn’t exactly what he thought it was, either.

Genre: Drama, Comedy

Starring: George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick

Available on DVD

I loved Up In The Air, although I don’t know why. It’s not my usual cup of tea.
