You know how most of the time movie trailers give too much away? Like all of the best parts? Well here’s something new for you: a preview that leaves hardly any clue as to what the movie’s about. I guess all that’s really important is that it’s from acclaimed (and notoriously private) filmmaker Terrence (The Thin Red Line) Malick, and it stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.
What’s up with all those cosmic shots? And the drowning/sinking house? And the door opening to a vast desert (or was that a snowscape)? I seriously had no idea what to make of those two minutes (except that they looked lovely), so I caved and searched for The Tree of Life‘s plot on Wikipedia. If you want to remain in the dark, read no further! But if you want to know what little information is available… continue on.
Still with me? OK, so here’s the deal: Sean Pean plays the adult version of one of Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain’s sons. The movie’s about his “journey from the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as a lost soul in the modern world, and his quest to regain meaning in life.” Combined with the curious imagery in the trailer, I think this is shaping up to be one interesting — dare I say “deep” — film. We’ll find out for sure when it hits theaters May 27. In the meantime, what do you think of this trailer? Does it make you want to see the movie just to understand what in the heck is going on? Or is its artsy-ness a turn-off?
Catch a much younger (and much more deranged) Sean Penn in Casualties of War.
