The 5 Best Twilight Characters (Who Aren’t Bella, Edward or Jacob)

twilight eclipseWhen I watched The Twilight Saga: Eclipse again after it came out on DVD, it hit me that almost all of my favorite scenes in the film series to-date involved characters OTHER than the three love-triangle leads. So I think it’s time to give a shout-out to the unsung heroes of the Twilight phenomenon.

Here’s who I consider to be the five best characters in the world of Forks (OK, six — ’cause there’s a tie for fifth place):

5. TIE! Mike Newton and Jessica Stanley – Bella’s friends provided the comic relief that was sorely needed in the first adaptation — and we all know that Anna Kendrick (Jessica) went on to make quite a name for herself in Up in the Air. I’m hoping for that same kind of break-out for Michael Welsh (Mike), whose illness during the “Face Punch” scene in New Moon totally stole the show (and, to me, was the second-best part about that movie… read on for the best). I sincerely hope we see a lot more of both Jessica and Mike in Breaking Dawn.

4. Aro – Michael Sheen as the leader of The Volturi was, hands down, the best thing about New Moon, don’t you agree? That’s why I was really bummed that we weren’t treated to another performance from him in Eclipse. For those of you seeing TRON: Legacy this weekend, tell me if you don’t detect a bit of Aro-ness in Sheen’s catty Castor.

3. Rosalie Hale - It’s funny, because in the books I adored Alice Cullen, but I can’t stand her in the films. Conversely, I thought Rosalie was a whiny brat in the novels, but she very much grew on me in the movies — especially in Eclipse. Her heart-to-heart talk with Bella about the life she’ll be giving up to become a vampire — and that crazy Vengeful Bride flashback! — were highlights of the third film.

Twilight-Eclipse-Rosalie2. Billy Black – Played with quiet confidence by Gil Birmingham, Billy (Jacob’s father) provides a calming presence for the lovesick, hormone-ravaged teenagers surrounding him. You believe that this guy’s seen it all… and that he fears for what will become of his tribe now that “the cold ones” have returned to their area. And you also know that he probably wishes he could smack Bella for how she treats Jacob!

1. Charlie Swan - For me, if they didn’t get Charlie right in the films, the entire franchise was going to be a lost cause.  That’s why I was so pleased when I saw how Billy Burke embodied all that I had envisioned for Charlie when I read the books. He’s the protective dad (with good reason), he’s the stoic cop, and — along with Jacob — he’s the biggest reason Bella has to second-guess her desire to join the undead.

Who would’ve made your Top 5? Let me hear it!

Erika – can you qualify the question with “5 Favorite Non Bella, Jacob, Edward So Far”? I am hoping for some more interesting vamps to make an appearances down the road.

I agree with you I loved Alice in the books and cannot stand her on screen. In my head, I saw Alice more of a Druscilla(from Buffy) like character than the cheerful spinning around character she has become. So Rosalie is one of my faves and I am still shocked she is the actor from Thirteen.

Jasper is so sad with his horrible attempt at, I hesitate to even call what he has been doing a Southern accent having a Southerner for a husband. The actor’s attempt makes me cringe similar to Ana Paquin’s accent on True Blood. Ugh.

And then, I have to disagree Charlie did not jive with me from what I saw in the book. However, he has grown on me even if I do wish he was a little older and grayer….

And finaly disagreement, I am not sure about Aro. I just cannot figure out if I dislike Michael Sheen as an actor or he keeps being the better actor in the bad movies, i.e Tron.

So then, who are my Top Five after all that complaining.

    2. Mike & Jessica – Would love to see more screen time for them both.
    1. Rosalie – She plays disgruntled and angst ridden so well a tough chore for a female actor.
    3. Esmee – All I keep thinking is she was on Grey’s……
    5. Carlisle – I know its pathetic to admit
    4. Sam – the actor’s quiet confidence shines through as he does need to say much for his presence to shine unlike shirtless boy wonder

Jenn, you need to see Michael Sheen in some NON genre stuff, like any of the Blair Trilogy (The Deal, The Queen, The Special Relationship), or Frost/Nixon, and my personal favorite The Damned United. He’s a very, very good actor.

Noooo, he is the guy in Frost/Nixon???? That explains it, great actor in crappy genre movies……

Maybe it’s because I am not a teenage girl, but there are no interesting characters in the Twilight series.

Wow oh wow. Just figured out again who is Michael Sheen. While channel surfing stumbled upon the HBO’s Special Relationship and saw Michael Sheen. Research his bio and he was Lucian in Underworld. Had no idea that was him until now. He is fabulous, Locke. Reminds me of my man Gary being a chameleon.

Then why does he seem so awful as Aro and the white haired guy in Tron????

Bella is straving for attention from any male the more aloft,or weird the better, I believe due to the lack of a relationship with her father. So she comes on very fickle. Jacob is a sore loser and feels he has something to prove because he lacks in so many things, and has to make himself feel important by trying to tear down Edward who has everything he wants but lacks. As many times as Bella rejects him,in Edwards presents, he continues to let himself get pulled back in by Bella again and again. Charlie is the most bias parent I have ever seen he has no real standards, except when it comes to his dislike for Edward. When Jacob does something it’s okay, but when it’s Edward involved it’s wrong. If I were Edward I would drop Bella in a heartbeat, she and Jacob deserves each other. Let them be poor and insecure together.
