From Page to Screen: Welcome to Film Adaptation Week!

by | Jul 26th, 2010 | 11:10AM | Filed under: In My Humble Opinion, Movies, Other Bits, Redbox Focus

With the arrival of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief in redbox kiosks across the country tomorrow, and several novels lined up to receive the Hollywood treatment in the coming months, we thought we’d dedicate some redblog posts this week to books that have been made into successful movies.

We might also have a little discussion about books that shouldn’t have ever hit the silver screen. I have a feeling there are some strong opinions out there about these topics.  I hope you prove me right!

So for now, start thinking about your favorite books that have been converted into films you were actually pleased with.  I’ll kick things off: The Lord of the Rings trilogy was something I feared immensely, only to be completely delighted by how Peter Jackson handled J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved world of Middle-Earth.  Frodo Lives, indeed!

Faithfully Yours: When adapting a book to film, how important is it that the film be faithful to the book?

I really liked Bladerunner, but it wasn’t really a precise adaptation. I guess really most of my favorite adaptations were more or less inspired by books and not direct adaptations. I enjoyed Interview With A Vampire as far as direct adaptations go though. Can we also discuss what books need to be made into movies, cuz I say we need any of the great steam-punk novels to be made into something with todays film making technology. This is like opening a can of worms with me :3

Big Stephen King fan. The best adaptations for me are Misery and The Green Mile.

I’m really excited for when Eat Pray Love hits the big screen. I’m reading the book right now and that book is so good that I’m getting more hyped about the film even more on each page I read. I think Eat Pray Love will have a success of portraying the book well.

Angels and Demons was the worst movie adaptation I have ever seen and I thought I had seen it all when they butchered alot of Stephen King’s novels.

My favorite book made into a movie is “To Kill a Mockingbird”. It’s a wonderful adaptation of the book.

I’ll throw my voice behind The Green Mile. It was damn good.
