redblog Readers Who Rock: Mickey

by Erika Olson | Feb 18th, 2010 | 1:06PM | Filed under: Readers Who Rock

Today we’re featuring a member of the redblog community who’s been with us for a solid six months and first came to our attention when he won one of our September swag bag giveaways. We really enjoyed hearing his take on movies and think you will, too. Pound the drums and shake the tambourines for…

Mickey Name: Mickey Keely

Occupation: Locksmith

Hello there, Mickey! Let’s begin with the basics first: when did you start using redbox, how did you find out about us, and how
close is the redbox you usually go to?

I’ve been
using redbox for about a year. I
saw the redbox at Walmart and decided to give it a try. The other
rental places always charge too
much for New Release movies and take to long to move them to the cheap
rack. A buck for movie is a good
deal to me. I sometimes use
Walmart’s redbox, but primarily use the one parked on Walgreens’ sidewalk because
it’s less than a half mile from work.

Are there certain types of movies that you prefer to see
in the theater… and along those same lines, are there certain types of movies
that you prefer to watch at home?

I like to
watch an action or thriller at the theater. A good action movie especially benefits from the atmosphere
of a dark theater, isolation from interruptions, and the company of a friend to
share the movie and discuss afterward. At home, I like to watch those movies I
missed in the theater, but always prefer a good comedy (laughter is
the best medicine). Besides, I can spend a dollar and not
feel too bad if the movie isn’t as good as I thought it would be.

Do you prefer a packed theater or a nearly empty one, or
does that depend on the movie?

When I go
to the movies, I prefer to be the only one there. I sometimes try to catch an early matinee in the middle of
the week so I can be the only one there.
But once the movie starts, it doesn’t matter if I’m alone or crowded: I
don’t pay attention to anything but the movie and my popcorn.

What kind of experience do you like or hope to have when
you watch a movie?

When I
watch a movie, I want to see every frame and hear every word. I want to absorb the movie in complete
detail. At the theater, that’s
easy. At home, I’ve got four kids
that usually provide some kind of discussion or interruption. That’s okay with me … an intermission
is generally welcomed and the pause button is always handy.

Murder-He-Says What, you don’t use the “Don’t make me throw this remote!!!” threat with your kids? Wow, you’re a patient guy!  OK, so now the big question: what five movies would you want on a deserted island
(deserted… except for a TV and a DVD player and one electrical outlet), and
more importantly, why?

Murder
He Says
– A
classic comedy/mystery with sharp wit that has always been fun to watch. (“I’m
with the Trotter Poll. We’re like the Gallop Poll but not in as much of a hurry.”)

Chicken
Run
– Not as good
as The Great Escape, but it reminds me of that great old movie while making me
laugh all the way through.

Drop
Dead Gorgeous
– I
don’t like beauty pageants, but this one was fun. Dark humor can be great fun. Everything is so over the top and cliché that it’s
ridiculous. I never get tired of
seeing this one.

Payback (1999 Mel Gibson) – A great tough
guy movie to round out the list.

The
Fiddler on the Roof

– Although I hate musicals, this is an exception. This one brings me back to the ultimate realization that
life is not what we expect or plan it to be. A dose of reality and introspection is proper and good, even
on a deserted island.

Very unusual picks — I don’t think we’ve seen any of those before, but you’ve got some solid reasoning backing them up.  Now can you let us know who you favorite movie heroes and villains are?

Bob Lee
Swagger (Shooter
)
is a patriot that never compromises his desire for justice. His courage and determination make him worth
watching. Although his true desire
is to go home and live in peace and quiet, he accepts the challenge and call to
serve his country.

Fracture_movie_image_anthony_hopkins__2_1 Ted
Crawford (Fracture
)
made a very devious, very crafty villain.
His meticulous planning is part of his character. It’s hard to have a “favorite” villain,
I suppose, but he would probably fit the bill: I enjoyed following, watching, and anticipating his every
move.

Ah, good call with Crawford — and I like how you didn’t go with the more obvious Hopkins villain.  (Though Hannibal Lecter is still a darn good villain by any measure.)  Here’s a new question for you we’ve thrown into the mix: which supporting film character do you think deserves a
spin-off?

Mickey
O’Neil (Snatch) made a very interesting character. He is so full of life and intrigue that I think you could
make quite a show of his livelihood.
The main disadvantage, of course, is that almost no one can understand
anything he says. So, deserving as
he may be of a spin-off, it would likely never work.

Yeah, those accents were definitely killer in Snatch. Back to your favorites: whos
your favorite actor?

Steve
McQueen. His characters were full
of life and determination. I enjoy
watching his movies and seeing his cool, calm demeanor and the devotion to the
characters that he played. He is
enjoyable to watch and I don’t recall him ever being offensive.

And are there any actors or actresses you cant
stand?

I have
never been able to stomach Bette Midler, but I really don’t know why. I saw Beaches
when it hit video shelves (20
years ago?), but the only thing I remember about the movie is that I completely
hated it. I think the main reason I
love Drowning Mona

so much is that Bette Midler drives off a cliff and dies while Shambala plays
during the opening credits. The
rest of the movie supports my opinion of her, although in reality she is
probably nothing like the character she portrays in the movie. I still can’t stand her.

Stand-by-me Oh my gosh, that’s hilarious.  I can see how Bette might grate on the nerves.  I’m guessing that you won’t be lining up any time soon to see her show in Vegas. So I will bet that Beaches isn’t on this list: what are your favorite movie soundtracks?

Stand
By Me
and The
Wedding Singer
: Both have some of the old songs I heard
as a kid and date the respective movies appropriately.

Ah, Stand By Me — one of my old faves.  I used to have such a crush on both Corey Feldman and River Phoenix.  But I digress.  If you could live in any movie, meaning that the people,
places and events in the movie became your reality, what movie would you
choose?

No
thanks. I watch movies to visit
fiction and leave reality for a couple of hours. I’d rather leave it that way. I like my reality just as it is.

Well that’s a good thing!  So you’re keeping with your own reality, but in that reality, is there any movie scene that ALWAYS makes you laugh, cry, or freak out no matter how many
times you’ve seen it?

The scene
in Saving Silverman
where Wayne and J.D. kidnap Judith, Wayne has camo paint on his face,
J.D. has a stocking over his head and both are bumbling incompetents. They succeed in the kidnapping, but
Wayne is shot with a tranquilizer dart and Judith and J.D. get electrocuted
while she is pushing his head in the toilet.

Knowingcrash Then
there is Knowing
:
The plane crash was an amazing view.
I watched that scene over and over on DVD. It’s clearly CGI, but still amazing to watch.

Once again, you’ve got some interesting choices there but you’ve clearly thought this through.  I can’t wait to hear what some of your favorite movie quotes are…

Hey does
this suit make me look fat? – No, your face does. (Tommy Boy
)

Every
minute you don’t tell us why you’re here, I cut off a finger. – Mine or yours? (Spies Like Us
)

Crooked cops;
Do they come any other way? If I’d
been just a little dumber, I could’ve joined the force myself. (Payback
)

This
woman has to be gotten to a hospital. – Hospital? What is it? – It’s a big
building with patients, but that’s not important right now. (Airplane!
)

Nervous?
– Yes. – First time? – No, I’ve been nervous lots of times. (Airplane!
)

Looks
like you’ve been missing a lot of work lately. – I wouldn’t say I’ve been
missing it, Bob. (Office Space
)

Excuse
me, I believe you have my stapler. (Office Space
)

Ah, that last one is one of my favorites, too!  Here’s my second-to-last question for ya: what’s the best film you saw in 2009?

Inglorious
Basterds
was very
enjoyable to me. I enjoyed the
dialogue, the violence, and the way history was re-written – even if only for a
short, fictitious moment. I’m sure
there were many who wished they could be a part of what the film
portrayed. But while we are on
2009, how about the worst film I saw?
I watched in absolute disgust as The Road
unveiled a complete waste of
resources and talent on the silver screen. After seeing the trailer, I waited for weeks for the movie
to come out … They teased us about when the movie would be released. The release date was changed at least
once, but once it was released, not one theater picked it up within a hundred
miles. Mickey&Chuck When it did turn up, it was
only showing at one theater. I
went to see it and realized why no one was showing it. It was a complete waste of time. I held on to the bitter end, waiting
for anything good, but it never came.

Wow, I really liked The Road!  Different strokes for different folks, though, right?  That’s what makes movies so great.  Let’s end with the upcoming movies you’re really looking forward to.

I am
looking forward to Iron Man 2
, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Red Dawn (I’m curious how different this
movie will be from the 1984 original; we live in an entirely different world
now!).

Thanks so much for your insightful answers, Mickey, and keep doin’ that thang you do here on redblog.  (And can we also just say, “How adorable is your son?!?! TOO adorable!!!”)

Welcome to the ranks, Mickey. You don’t live too far from where I am in Broken Arrow. I wonder how many other Readers who Rock live in Oklahoma? I think we should have a party for all the RWR folks. How about it, Redbox? All-expenses-paid trip to Chicago for a party at HQ?

Welcome, Mickey! Loved your 5 movies … particularly Chicken Run and Fiddler … Just one of those things.
And can I second Fiirvoen’s party? Heck, my travel costs would be pretty low!

So all you guys are planning a trip to Chicago at Redbox’s headquarters, so the question is: Will it happen? When will it happen?
All you guys who are planning this trip to Chicago, you all haven’t met each other and you will be all strangers because you only talked on this site, isn’t it kind of bad?
All I know, I’m not going even when I’m a RWR, I’m not meeting strangers.
Just be careful with each other while in Chicago, if it will happen.
I’m just making that point there, I’m not trying to ruin the plans of it, I’m making a statement to you guys.

moviegoer – really it’s all just tongue in cheek, I doubt redbox is going to pay for us all to come to Chicago. LOL! But if they do, I know e will keep us safe, right e???

Moviegoer. We are not serious in the least. I wouldn’t want to go to Chicago if my wife and two kids couldn’t come. As for meeting fellow RWRockers, if there was a party, it would be for those 18 and up or accompanied by a parent. But there will most likely not be one. Especially not expenses paid.

Thanks guys for getting my point on the RWR party thing!
So your guesses are it won’t mostly not happen. You would have to contact Erika on this one because she lives in Chicago (Redbox’s headquarters) and then she would have talk to the Redbox CEO about it, and soon then it might happen.
I have Erika’s email address since I got contacted by her for something but I’m not going to pull this party thing on her right now, don’t let me. Erika is first of all busy with Redblog (yeah, how do you think she gets her posts up on Redblog?), she is a film critic and etc.
I know my age but don’t let that bug you. I only been to Chicago two times and now, once I go there again I would have to find Redbox’s headquarters!
I really doubt Redbox will pay for you guys to come to it’s headquarters. Guys, what do you think Redbox is? Redbox is a DVD rental kiosk, it’s not a kiosk that you can sign up for parties. Redbox was the best invention ever made! Then Redblog is the best site ever to the Redbox!
I know all of you are coming back on me from my statement, I’m fine with that. Fiirvoen started this party thing, talk to him about it. I don’t know anything about the party, I was just making a statement to ya guys.
And I think we shouldn’t talk about this anymore because I’m preetty sure we are ruining Mickey’s page.
