Wow — lots of you guessed the Freeze Frame stills correctly this weekend! Alas, there can be but one winner, and this time around that winner is Matthew S. He gets to make himself a grand ol' aluminum foil trophy to commemorate his accomplishment. In second place was yet another Reader Who Rocks, Trevor L. And in third place was Jez, who asked whether or not we'd give her a White Russian instead of a self-made trophy if she won. I guess she'll have to keep playing to see if we ever allow our champions to receive other prizes (hint: if there's no expense to us, we probably will).
Jez mentioned the White Russian because it is the favorite drink of one Dude, as in The Dude, as in Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski, the second of our three stills from Friday. Useless trivia tidbit of the day: The Dude drank nine White Russians over the course of the film. His love of the milky drink led to the creation of t-shirts such as this one. But enough about booze, let's move onto the other two stills. The first was from Revenge of the Nerds and the third was from Coyote Ugly. What linked those three titles? The actor who I'll forever think of as Dan Conner from the TV sitcom Roseanne, John Goodman.
Goodman's been a favorite of the Coen brothers for a long time, appearing in several of their films, from Barton Fink to Raising Arizona to The Hudsucker Proxy to O Brother, Where Art Thou? to the aforementioned Big Lebowski. He also does a lot of voice work (among other roles, he was Pacha in The Emperor's New Groove and Sully in Monsters, Inc.), and this weekend he'll add one more line to his resume for bringing the wealthy but kind sugar mill baron, "Big Daddy" La Bouff to life in The Princess and the Frog.
Disney's New Orleans-set tale was a great fit for the NOLA resident — though born in Missouri, Goodman's lived in The Big Easy for several years and has appeared in educational commercials post-Katrina to raise awareness about ongoing hurricane recovery efforts. Heck, he was even in the film The Big Easy.
For knowing that Goodman was the link between our featured films, the following peeps get to make themselves a Common Thread Button o' Pride: Matthew S, Trevor L, Rebecca, James Meisenburg, Donna, Glenn Berkshier, Heather Lindsey, Anthony, Josiah Cuff and April Richardson. Good work, guys!
We'll be back with another round of Freeze Frame, and our review of The Princess and the Frog, on Friday.
